Have a look at this funny cartoon about piracy. It does contain some offensive language and is a story about piracy, but I don't think it is actually instructive.

i haven't pirated it but i'm going through the same thing with breaking bad. i'd love to watch season 4 before 5 starts but its just not readily available. and god forbid AMC repeat it.

its literally like you have one chance to watch these shows and if you miss them you're s.o.l. until they decide to release them on disc (or you decide to overpay for them on amazon or itunes)....usually its when the new season has already started, defeating the purpose of trying to catch up altogether.

I personally don't Pirate Books because I believe it's important to support the Author. Simple as that.

Keep up that believe ("it's simple") for as long as you possibly can.

Does downloading a book but not reading it, or only reading a few pages count as piracy?

great question. is that really any different than sitting in a book store and reading the first few chapters then deciding you don't want it? is sitting in B&N reading a magazine (you didn't pay for) cover to cover as you sip coffee, piracy?

The problem is, when you download off a site offering pirated books you support those people who profit from piracy. They get increased traffic, increased ad revenue. And that is definitely wrong.

Yes, it is different. Piracy is not unauthorised READING; it's unauthorised COPYING. When you read the magazine in B&N you are not creating an additional copy of the magazine. There was one magazine before you started to read it; there is still one magazine after you finish reading it. It's creating the extra copy by downloading that's violated copyright law; it's entirely irrelevent whether or not you subsequently read that copy that you've created.

I've pirated ebooks. But only the ones that I had already bought (paperback or hardcover) And I never buy new. A couple of times I pirated an ebook based on someones recommendation and became a loyal fan, purchasing any and all new books as they became available. But again never new. I just can't afford them.

We have begun the process of creating a network where only one copy of a text ever need to exist. All digital goods simply need to be accessed.

Shall we place every text behind a paywall?

Or grant universal access to every text?

Should the decision of access be left to the uploader of the text?

How can we allow the uploader to make this decision and still allow for the lending of texts that cannot be copied but only accessed?

If you buy a digital piece of content YOU should be able to use it wherever, whenever and on any device you want and be able to loan or permanently transfer ownership to another person.I personal would like to see a transfer away from an ownership based market to a rental based market for intellectual property.I currently subscribe to Spotify for music and Netflix for movies and would gladly pay a monthly fee to have content for my Kindle that's better then Amazon Prime'is at the moment.

You mean you'd rather not own permanently the copy of the things you buy, but just have them temporarily? I'd say that would be worse than the current system.

Isn't that what libraries have been doing for some time now? What Red Falcon describes is that he doesn't buy a copy, but rather loans a copy. Naturally, the price would be different as well.

No it's not piracy, as long as they allow it, but I'll betcha you wouldn't be allowed to walk out with the book.

Piracy is not about content, but about form/implementation/media.

That's what is messed up and what must be addressed by enhanced copyright laws and their implementation.

I object.

Copying isn't the problem, distribution is. I make unauthorized copies every time I burn a backup cd of something or other. I make unauthorized copies whenever I use the photocopier at the library. I dare you to go after me for piracy since the copies stay in my control.
