				"you've just gotta read this!"

Every so often, I read a book that makes me want to go up to everybody I know, and shove it in their face, and say "you've just gotta read this!" My latest is "Calling Invisible Women" by Jeanne Ray, but there have been others.

Does this happen to you too? what books make you want to walk up to complete strangers and tell them how wonderful a book you've just read is? |

The Eden series by Harry Harrison. I am pretty laid back about everything else I have ever read. I just think those 3 books are amazing and will tell anybody who will listen about them. I am a loon and it is strange as I am not a fantasy fan. I can not remember any other book or books I have ever pushed.

Don't like it when others try to shove their book taste into my eyes, so I avoid doing it to them, thus opening myself up to that kind of intrusion. |

Yes, yes, yes. Luckily I have a few friends I can tell. I'll also write a review on Amazon or B&N. Maybe a Facebook link to the book or author.

My hubby is so tired of hearing me talking about the Stephanie Plum series.

I have no one to talk to my reads about. The other day I was jumping up and down because the next Plum book will be released on November 20th.

Never done it, regardless of how wonderful the book might be. If someone shoved a book in my face and told me I MUST read it, I'd be far more likely than otherwise to never read it.

Depends how literally you mean what you write I guess. I often recommend books to people, sometimes enthusiastically, but never in the way described. |

Sometimes a recommendation is good..... but books are like music and very personal to the reader.... for me most genre writing is pulp and fun to read but usually one centimeter deep and 100 meters wide...which is what pulp should be and from time to time I love it.... sad to say that when you hear many people tell you that you have to read a certain book it ends up being a "legend in its own lunchtime".... usually from fair to middling with a push or dreadful and in need of several editors.... yes... maybe the book is a page turner....but the writing is painful to read and the dialogue is like an Agatha Christie novel.... wooden, dated and over-hyped....

I'm quite often at the receiving end of this "you've just gotta read this!" as I hear these words from my daughter approximately once every week. As a "good mother" I try to follow her recommendations, although not every one. But I very seldom tell others what to read.

Nah .... a book that I think is good, is because I think it's good.

Books that others think are good have been a total waste of time in the main, and expense if I've actually also been talked into buying the blighter, lol!!! ![]() I'm the same with movies .... very individual tastes we all have, methinks. ![]() But did you hear the one about ...... ( )

That is what Goodreads.com is for. That way I can READ, at my leisure, your review about Book X.

But I don't verbally tell anyone. I would find it rude [unless I knew the person very well] |

No, I don't, as reading is a very personal experience. And as already mentioned by a couple of peeps here, too much pushing of something, book or movie, can put you off. It took me years to see Star Wars and E.T. for that very reason.

As far as books go, I now have a passionate hatred for "Captain Corelli's Mandolin" and "Birdsong" because I was constantly told how wonderful they were, and when I finally read them found that they did not live up to the hype. Nowhere near, in my opinion. So that's why I tend to keep my opinions to myself .

I've on occasion gone on and on and on about some book I've fallen in love with, to a handful of closest friends (not so much because I want to "convert" them but because it's currently filling my brain and I have a hard time not thinking or talking about it), but I try to make sure I'll never cross that limit and tell them "you really must read it" (or even "you really should read it"). Sometimes they've given in and read it. ;-)

I really dislike it when anyone tells me what I "must" or "should" read, or "you will love this" (which comes off as an order; I'd like to make up my own mind, thank you), so I always try to avoid doing that to others. I know quite a few of my friends strongly dislike being told what to read, too. |
