I've never heard of one in all the years I've been here, but that doesn't mean it isn't done. I've seen dozens of neighbors come and go, and always, when moving in, the new people are always the ones to give out gifts.

But... it's VERY unusual for Japanese to have parties IN their homes for any reason. Houses and apartments tend to be very small, and to have several more people inside really gets crowded unless everyone remains seated. It's not even so common to invite another couple over for dinner. VERY COMMON is to have a party at a local restaurant or pub. All of them have private rooms just for that purpose, and can easily provide the food and drinks for larger numbers of people at the same time.

I live in what is considered a good size condo, sized for a family of four. But when I invite another couple over for dinner, the house really feels crowded, even with everyone just sitting at the dinner table. I will say that it's very difficult for me to cook for more than 4-6 people at one time due to space in the kitchen.

My morning cigarette is the one that I miss most. Even after I 'stopped smoking' I kept up my one cigarette a day for years - my morning cigarette with tea. Now I'll only have a cigarette once in a while when out with friends.

I know how you feel, I give up smoking when I'm in Australia, we pay up to $17 a packet, here in Colombia I pay $1. This country will be the death of me if I'm not careful.

I just got back from a high speed dog walk. Luca is strong and in need of some training!

My sister came over and we ordered food and watched The Help (I liked the book better). We had arranged for my parents to go out to dinner for their 34th anniversery. We had fun but I'm tired, I woke up tired eventhough I slept well last night.

Now I'm off to take a shower and curl up in bed to finish my book. Tomorrow I'm getting up early because with the predicted weather I'm expecting my friends to get home early.

I'm looking at the dirty paper plate and empty pop bottle on the desk in front of me and thinking I should get up and toss them in the trash. But I don't wanna. I'm also (sort of) killing time while I wait for hubby to get home, which he won't do for a few more hours.

I am SOOOOO jealous of you for being able to do that! I would love to be able to smoke just one cigarette 'once in a while.'

Unfortunately, I'm a smokeaholic. If I have one, I'll have two. And if I have two, I'll have three, then four, then the whole pack, then a whole carton, and be a full time smoker again. I've done that too many times over the years.

Next month marks 14 years since I smoked my last cigarette. I pray I don't smoke today...

Don't do it, Stichy! I did that, too, and failed. I cut way back and went for almost a year smoking only occasionally - not even as much as once per day. It worked fine until I found myself back up to a pack or two per day and then it was another year or two to finally quit for good. In August it will be 30 years since my last drag. Never ever again.

Thanks for the support, doggy. Have another doughnut on me. Having tried to quite countless times, and even lasting up to two years once, I've learned that I really don't 'want just one.' I want the whole carton. I want the routines that went along with smoking; the 'after dinner sit back, reach into the pocket and take out a cigarette, tap it on the table 2-3 times and put it into my mouth, reach for my 'special lighter,' open and ignite in one smooth motion, torch the end of the cigarette and inhale..... holding it for an extra second or two, then slowly exhaling...

Damn! That was almost as enjoyable as actually doing it!

I know full well that the minute I tell myself that I've 'quit,' I will try smoking 'just one.' So like the successful AA program, I say that "I'm a smoker who hasn't had a cigarette in almost 14 years. One day at a time. I didn't smoke today, and I pray that I won't smoke tomorrow." This seems to work for me, but I still think about smoking often... After all, I was a 2-pack a day, for 43 years smoker. That did fill a lot of time in my life.

These days I'm glad that I am not smoking for other reasons too. I see people standing outside in the rain and snow, walking out of restaurants between courses to smoke, huddled into little cubicles at at train stations, etc., etc., and am glad that I no longer have the physical addiction. It was certainly a harder addiction to stop than any others I've known, and I truly feel for smokers who want to quit but haven't found their way to do it yet. It ain't easy...

Waiting for my friends to text me they're on their way home. I'm hoping that won't be until at least another hour because then the rain should be letting up a bit.

I too was addicted to smokeahol (that addictive thing in smokes). Finally now after 5 and a half years I don't even want one any more. I have trained myself to feel a bit sick when thinking about smokes and hopefully I will continue to not smoke. The only thought that seemed to work was that I am a smoker, but I choose not to smoke today.... or tommorrow...or...or...

It amazes me there there is a 'war on drugs' but it doesn't include the two most dangerous ones. Those are the two that account for more death, more sickness, more loss of work time, more injury than all the illegal ones put together. Yet because there is so much profit money tied up in tobacco and Alchohol, they aren't even considered worth more than a few million in 'anti' campaigns by the governments, while billions are spent in 'pro' advertisements and campaigns by the industries.

It wasn't the aversion therapy method, was it? My BIL (who lives in Oz) tried keeping dog poo in a plastic container, and every time he felt the craving, he took a sniff. Associating unpleasant smells and feelings of sickness with wanting to smoke. Not sure it worked for him that time. It was his near-fatal heart attack that finally stopped him...

I gave up when I found myself sitting round with a bunch of idiots doing endless Lord of the Rings quiz nights, smoking and drinking (I was quite a bit younger, and it wasn't just tobacco...), and I had this mini-epiphany - WHAT AM I DOING with my life??!! Never smoked again.

Well done to all of you that have managed to quit.
