Just about the only way I can deal with exercising is by listening to podcasts (Skeptics Guide to the Universe ftw) or audiobooks. I also prefer to listen when I'm driving.

Using an iPod, you can speed up the audio. I assume other MP3 players have the same option.

For me the Narrator has to be a voice actor or I just don't listen to it. It's like watching a movie but without the picture. If the narrator is monotone or just reads the book then forget it. A Voice Actor reads and acts the parts out which makes for a great presentation.

I can't zone out when I got it booming in my ears. I can hear the narrator's voice and nothing else.

My first month back to reading after many years saw 7 books consumed. Nothing heave or really long, just trashie easy read to bring me back to the fold. I am now into Game of Thrones, which Is driving me nuts as it is near on word for word the tv show. I wanted to find all this juicy stuff not in the tv show, so very put off. But I refuse to not finish a book and want to stab people who can read more than one book at a time as I just can not master that art. So been a slack reading week here as I am having to force myself.

I don't really keep track of my own--but I have a friend on Goodreads who tracks it there. She's well over 100 books so far this year...I can only admire from afar. :>)

I've been tracking my books for the first time this year - I'm something over100 - although I've been reading a series of novellas and am not sure how to count them - do maybe 3 novellas equal one book? next year I should add tracking page counts.

But then, I'm unemployed, and am only taking one class for school this term, so I've got lots of reading time.

I believe 300+ page count as a novel. I don't read Novella's often but when I do I don't count them at all unless they are in a Anthology. Most HQ books are about 250+ pages but I do count them.

I've been tracking what I read ever since I was a kid. I still have my index file containing titles, authors and opinions of the books I read. When I was in my 20's I carried a stack of index cards with me at all times, a card for each letter of the alphabet, with author's name and the list of titles acquired, written very small. That was very helpful when going book shopping. (Yes I still have the cards).

Now I track on goodreads, and have google docs spread sheets for titles read by month as well as by genre for the year. I've read close to 100 this year according to goodreads, but that includes a lot of short stories and some DNF. For an actual count I can go to my spreadsheets.

I've created a summer reading list for myself that is about 50 books. Now if I can stick to it, but, I won't. I tend to jump around. And I often have several books going at once. Right now, just one actively reading, but 5 or more others that I've started but haven't gone back to, including May's Kindle Lending Library book. It's like I have book ADD. There are just so many that I want to read!

Just last week I began thinking that I need to find a way to keep track of what I have read. Once in a great while I will get a book I have already read. It is time to devise a plan, or a system.

All of your ideas are helpful. I am now tied between spreadsheet or Goodreads. I guess I will ponder a little longer.

I read for pleasure only and have no idea how many books I read. Not tons like some of you. I am on my third book this week, and one was a very short story, which I don't want to count.

I think I am leaning more toward spread sheet for title and author and date read. Maybe give my own rating of it.

Very interesting thread!

My advice is to do both. My friend keeps a spreadsheet so she can track where she got the book (library, owns it, borrowed, etc.) GR doesn't have notes (Shelfari does and you can keep them private, but adding books there isn't as convenient IMO). If one method or the other falls by the wayside, you'll have figured out which one works for you!!!

Taming- that was awesome! I did it just like you instructed and my list is almost done now. I really appreciate your help!

BearMountainBooks- I need to fine tune the spread sheet with some of your information too. Then take to investigating your other recommendations.

Thank you both!

GR does have a place where you can write "Private notes," and only for you to see them. Its in the "Edit your review" page for whatever book it is you are reading.

I use GR myself, not so much for the bookkeeping, but for the reviews, and the many great suggestions I've found since I joined in there.

I was diagnosed with ADD, and my reading patterns reflect it. I jump back and forth between baseball, charity knitting, and reading. And my reading is spotty as well - might be into mysteries, one after another, or contemporary romances, or political comentary. Now, introduce internet activity about reading or knitting or the Cubs, and I have a hard time accomplishing anything!
