I'm going to try A Stranger in Mayfair by Charles Finch. Victorian mystery by a young Oxford grad. |

I read American Vampire 1, a graphic novel by Scott Snyder and Stephen King, with art by Rafael Albuquereque. Imagine if a young and especially badass Clint Eastwood got made into a vampire in the 1880s old west and a new kind of vampire that had evolved from the older, European type. Now imagine if Berenice Bejo's character from The Artist was made into such a new type of vampire by said Clint Eastwood vampire in 1920s Hollywood. Their stories intertwine and the fight the old, European vamps. Cool stuff.

Been a while since I posted on this thread, but for the most part it's been a lot of easy reads since the first of the year.
I've decided to get back to a list of epic fantasies I've been wanting to read. First in line is to finish Joe Abercrombie's Last Law Series with Last Argument of Kings. Reviews seem to be a mixed on this series and especially on this last book, but so far I'm enjoying it a lot. |

We'll I finished Watch Me Die by Lee Goldberg. Another in the amazon thriller set.
This is the story of Harvey Mapes... a security guard who love to read private dick novels, and ends up being asked to do some detecting by a guy in the community that Harvey protects. Well, if you call sitting in a guard shack during the graveyard shift watching CCTV. The story started interesting but really didn't go anywhere. Another "thriller" that didn't really thrill me. What Next??? I really ready for a gripping read that I won't want to put down, and will feel sad when it's over... but happy to find there is a Sequel or next story in the series that is even better. Bob, have you tried MC Beaton's 'Hamish Macbeth' series? Highland country bumpkin bobby who solves murders in Scottish Agatha Christy type settings, usually with a cast of characters (I deliberately put that in Italics because they really really REALLY are a group of characters!) Almost a 'Colombo' in kilts meets the game of 'Clue.'
Not the thriller that John Sandford writes, nor the twists and turns that Jeffery Deaver puts out, but good fun, some chuckles, and a solid plot. You know who is going to get 'done in' quickly, but it takes some doing to figure out who done it! Stitchawl |

I suspect that I would like the earlier series as well, but I'm not buying them just now. And now I'm going to re-read The Lord of the Rings. I've finally got around to watching my set of the extended edition DVDs, and I've got irritated again by all the changes to the characters, many of whom behave in ways that I thought they didn't in the book (particularly Théoden, Fangorn and Faramir). So I need to re-read to check that it's the film that's distorting them, and not my memory! And I find I need to re-download my copy, as it seems I didn't update after the initial typos were fixed. Luckily it's still downloadable (but not to new purchasers) from Fictionwise. |

Another quirky cozy series are the Feathering mysteries by Simon Brett. Not sure what the status of them on eBooks is, since I read most of them via dead tree book or Audible. But worth a try if you can find them at a reasonable price. |
