Perhaps it is the idea of selling that is wrong.
Giggles is right. We need a more advanced conditioner. Pirates suffered innumerables tangles, split ends, and other hair horrors. And it should be generally available free of charge so that noone has a bad hair day.

Why would I need to do that when I can just imagine myself doing so after listening to a song on the radio and have my biochip/mobile phone know that I want a copy of the song to listen to at my leisure?

You can, use Spotify or a similar service. Why are you so desperate to avoid legal options?

The human condition would be much better served by paying $200 for a quality book than reading 100 low quality books for free.

But if everybody read quality books, what would happen to Giggleton's vision of the great barter society?

i support the underdogs i.e. indie authors and small presses. i'll always pay for their books and will willingly pay for multiple formats.

however i feel no such compulsion when it comes to the 'big guys'. i don't really know why i make this distinction though. its not about price and i have no robin hood style worldview so i don't know.

I bought what started out as a duly authorized and sold copy of the movie. It was intended to be watched on my home screen. I format shifted so that I could watch it on my home screen. My format shifting in this case was not direct because of a failure of my recording equipment, but the end result was exactly the same and there was no collateral damage along the way.
Weren't you the one who was saying it was wrong for me to pirate the ebook because I already owned the papercopy? I'd be surprised to see how this situation is any different.

(PS. Sorry if it wasn't you. I just don't want to navigate through 6 pages.)

Maybe not the physical DVD, but it should certainly entitle me to the .avi (or whatever). I think it is insane that Film Studios don't already do this.

And also if it is only victimless in my own mind. Who is the victim then? The film company that has already taken $15 from me?

What about poem piracy? I used to be graded on my ability to retain and recite entire copyrighted poems from memory.

There are hundreds of poems I will never need to buy a book to keep. My brain contains thousands of dollars of lost sales.

You paid to VIEW the movie, not to own a copy. Completely different things. Like reading a book from the library, does not give you the right to make a copy of that book.

You can think whatever/whomever you want is insane, but you are still breaking the law if you do what you say.

Yes, you paid $15 to view the movie, not to own a copy, as I said, very different things. It's actually quite easy to understand.

But if you PERFORMED those poems by reciting them on stage for pay, I believe you might be liable to pay performance fees....I'm actually not certain about that though....I know it would be true for music....there may be no agency that collects performance fees for poems.

I suspect that if someone with perfect memory were to recite a bestselling novel (particularly for pay) the lawyers would be all over them.

Personal use is one thing, performance, sharing, copying is a completely different thing.

I was being silly, of course, because I think the original topic at hand is presented in a tongue-in-cheek way - but there are thousands of songs in my head, too that I can remember because the radio stations overplayed them. "Moves like Jagger" is embedded into my skull whether I like it or not. I didn't even have to pay for the experience there In fact, they may owe ME money for altering the natural thought patterns that would have been in my head, had I not been interrupted by the song :-)
