My T1 died after 2 weeks

Happy 350 owner here - I upgraded to a T1 before going on holiday - used it while away and it was great - loved it. Took it with me yesterday to work and found it flat - which was odd, I hadn't used it THAT much... so I charged it up overnight last night - light was on, indicating it was charging. Light off this morning, switched it on...nothing. Still flat. Plugged it in again and was able to switch it on while plugged in to power - but evidently it had lost its charge prematurely and now couldn't recharge, for whatever reason.

Fortunately I had all the packing and receipt and got my money back tonight. They had no others in stock, otherwise I would have exchanged. They're not exactly easy to find here in the UK - its either Kindle or Kobo. But the Kobo is apparently not as good quality as the Sony (after reading reviews) and the Kindle...is the Kindle and I like to have choice about what I can put on it without feeling like the retailer's bitch...

Hopefully better luck when I find another one...

Could you perhaps ask the store to hold one for you and give you a call when they get their next shipment in?

350 is much better than T1 anyways, I wish I never sold my 350. They are so hard to find these days.

Sorry to hear of your troubles. You could order online from the Sony UK website. It says they are in-stock.

Thanks! I will probably shop around online and pick one up cheaper - I paid full price for this one. The store doesn't normally stock it so won't use them again - for some reason they had some showing online and I was able to reserve and collect at my local store but they don't have any out on display and don't normally stock it! Most odd.

I like the 350 still - my wife has it now - I just fancied the larger screen and wireless (and both are excellent). Does feel less "substantial" than a 350 though - the plastic casing I guess. I think it could do with a faster processor too - did seem a bit sluggish selecting options etc.

Might have to borrow back the 350 for now. :-)

Found another ok - my 350 had been an utter bargain on ebay, so I tried there and found a factory refurbished T1 with 12 months warranty for under £100. Which for the UK is a good price. :-)

Why not contact Sony and see if they will replace it. It should be under warranty, unless I missed something in the original post.

It was 15 days old so yes under warranty - I would have settled for an exchange if the store had stock...but they didn't. Far easier and quicker to return to the store than mess about mailing it back to Sony - who, in the UK at least, would probably tell me to deal direct with the retailer, not them. The store is always our first contact point for recently purchased , not the manufacturer.

As it was, they refunded immediately and within 24 hours I had ordered another elsewhere at 75% of the original cost; so saved myself some money.

Yet another good reason to not get a Sony. That is just piss poor customer service. Amazon has its faults but when an in warranty Kindle breaks, you call Amazon, they send you a replacement no matter where you bought it, you send the broken back in the box your new one came. Average time is 2 days across the globe. You should not have to jump through hoops to get you in warranty device fixed.

I think you misunderstand the consumer legislation that applies in many countries other than your own and that has led you to making an unfair criticism of Sony.

In the UK and in my own country the consumer protection legislation makes the retailer (referred to as the "Trader" in the UK legislation) liable for the guarantee, not the manufacturer, and those liabilities are almost without exception far superior to manufacturer's warranties. For example, protection apples for the expected life of the equipment and is not limited, as is typical, to one year. The manufacturer's guarantee and any exclusions in it are irrelevant except to the extent that if any matter in the manufacturer's warranty is superior then that benefit still applies.

So, in the case alluded to by the OP Sony would be both correct and giving of the very best value advice by referring the purchaser back to the retailer as the original poster inferred would be the likely outcome. The purchaser would then be obliged to put the matter right and in the original poster's case, because of circumstances, a refund was the accepted resolution.

For example, taking up your Kindle promotion, in my own country I would be foolish to return a locally purchased faulty Kindle to Amazon or their agent for remedy as the obligations on the local retailer are far superior to Amazon's "limited" 1 years warranty.

I've dealt with Sony for warranty service and I've have very good service. They sent a replacement reader via UPS 2-day service and emailed me a label to send the other back via UPS at their expense. Can't ask for better then that.

Agree with the point that it's not necessarily poor customer service from Sony, it's not that uncommon for there to be a request that you deal with the manufacturer and not the retailer for some items, but generally speaking, the retailer is the place to go if you want a refund/exchange. Far superior warranty though, erm no.

You can battle with a retailer that you are due a repair/replacement because of a fault and that its not lasted anywhere near it's expected life-span (especially in this day and age where everything seems to have been built to a limited life-span), but I know if I bought a Kindle from Tesco, I'd far rather try contacting Amazon for a replacement, immaterial of whether it was still within the standard 1-year warranty or not. The bottom line is, Amazon's customer service is usually so simple & easy that returning to them is a complete no-brainer.

Incidentally, how much did people pay for their 350/650s and how much more than the current price of the T1 would you be willing to pay for a new Sony reader that was as solidly built as the older machines but with the more advanced tech of the T1?

You missed the part where they said probably. They did NOT actually contact Sony so you can't judge on assumptions. Well, I suppose anyone can but they'd be wrong for doing so just as you are here.

Good grief... As was said (thank you!) by my New Zealand based friend, we do not go to the manufacturer here, we go to the seller. THEY deal with the return to the manufacturer, while in warranty.

I used the word "probably" as I've never returned to the manufacturer so was surmising what their probable response would be (given the way it works here in the UK). Nothing to do with Sony's service (which I have no experience of).

And nothing whatsoever to do with Kindles!

I will, as an aside, confirm Amazon have an excellent returns policy. The mp3 player I bought from them lst year went badly wrong after about 5 months - they asked me to return it (not even original packaging required) and they would replace/refund. They did the refund before I'd even sent it to them (as they had no stock to replace). An excellent company to deal with - but I really don't want a Kindle.

Finally - the one I bought on ebay yesterday, arrived this morning within less than 24 hours. As new, firmware updated, ready to go. Superb. :-)
