The price differential and library are non-issues in the US. I know that I sometimes forget that they are an issue for others. If it meant saving $30, I might go with the Kobo. Unless I really needed something like tts.

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion on anything. I like chocolate & you like vanilla. Who's right? Both of us. It's our own opinion. However.....if you think any manufacturer is going to support an older model of something with new firmware updates when the newer model comes out, kindly share what you're smoking because I could use an alternate view of reality now and then. ![]() |

A Kindle is rarely updated after a new version comes out. There have been exceptions, the K1 and K2 can be used at the library, for example, but that is a rarity.

Pretty much my thought processes as well - I ruled the Kindle out immediately because of the lack of library support. I love my T1, but I think if I were buying today, I'd make the same decision as you. Some of the features I thought I'd use a lot on the Sony I really haven't, and I don't think they're worth the £50 price hike over the Kobo. TBH, if it weren't for the battery life, I'd probably go down evern lower and settle for the WiFi.

Last week Sony.ca had the T1 on sale for $119.99, and that combined with a $25 of coupon (SHARE2012MAY or something similar, I don't recall at the moment) reduced the price before tax to $95 (including basic shipping). But then I took too long to pull the trigger and the price went back to $149.99. I was pretty disappointed at that point cause I had decided against the Kobo at that point, but I also didn't want to spend $125 either.
But it turned out that Dell.ca also had the PRS-T1 on sale at $109 for the Red (back ordered 5-7 days), $119 for the Black (available immediately) and $149 for the white. I looked online to find a coupon code and I found one for $15, I tested it- and it worked. Then I just had to decide between red and black. The red one was cheaper but it was going to be 5-7 days until it would be ready to ship. I wasn't sure if I wanted a red reader, so I decided to spend the extra $10 and get the Black one. According to Dell.ca it should arrive on Friday, but since we live on Vancouver Island I think I'll probably have to wait until Monday or Tuesday next week. Once it arrives and I've had a bit of time to use it I'll review and compare it to the Kobo Wifi. Cheers, Brad |

I could still shop at Amazon and convert books to be read on the Kobo or PRS-T1 if I really wanted to, but by the same token, I can still utilise library books for my Kindle... but as well as the fact library ebook lending is a bit patchy in the UK, I'm finding I am buying more books than I planned to, because I'm finding a lot more decent offers on ebooks than I used to with paperbacks. To cut a long story short, I've not found the non-library issue anywhere near as much a problem as I thought, and I'm someone who used to be a regular at my local library. Mind you, if I was buying my e-reader today, the price of the Kobo Touch compared to the others makes it very tempting. When the PRS-T1 first came out I was really tempted by it, there's no way I'd buy it today when I could get the Kobo for £50 less. It'd be a far tougher decision if I was in the US where the price difference isn't so vast between the various devices. |

The feature that I use most on my Sony T1 that is absent in the Kindle and Kobo is the built in multiple foreign dictionaries. They alone, in my opinion, justify the price of the T1. The Kobo is quite a nice ebook reader, though. I love the ability to add fonts and adjust spacing, and I quite like the design of the ebook reader. If I found it on sale I'd be tempted to pick it up.

I am a happy T1 owner, and think it's great. I bought mine back in Oct 2011, but if I were looking at buying one now I would seriously consider the Kobo for the following reasons:
1) Price at £79 it's a good price, though it can be picked up for £58.99 from www.staples.co.uk (with a free toaster... random but true!!) Making it less than half the cost of the T1 in the UK! (T1 is still £129.99 here) 2) Firmware support/Updates - Kobo is actively being developed, whereas the Sony has had some bug fix releases, but no new features - how hard could it be to add an option to change how often the screen refreshes?!) 3) PC/Mac software on Sony is absolutely awful. 4) Sony reader store was 6 months late in opening, has a poor selection of titles, and the most expensive prices (£7.14 for The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo for example!). I have used the Kobo bookstore and found it far better on general price, usability and discount codes! |
