How about
  • "dog eared" - condition a book gets into when many of its pages have had corners turned down
  • and "Dog leg" - when you take a short cut across a corner instead of going along the other two sides of a triangle

Seeing RickyMaveeta's new avatar, reminded me of a local Colloquialism. We have had so many armadillos come into the Alabama area that it is common to see them killed on the roads.

So do you know what we call armadillos in the South US? " 'Possum on the half shell."

Or ... "as sick as a dog."

I don't know where that came from ... I mean, don't all mammals get sick more or less to the same degree??

We prefer to say "bread", and thus often use as a euphemistic colloquialism for the activity, "lamb roll".

If an Aussie asks you if you want a lamb roll, think twice.

Cheers,
Marc (hey, how did this become about Aussies? It's the Kiwis that are into the lamb-lovin'!)

Sure, why not. Of course, if we continue down this path of -matics, it will eventually be "Grease Lightning", and we surely don't want to go there (TMI, as they say).

Cheers,

Because most people (outside of those in Australia and New Zealand) have this absurd idea that the two countries are really (really) close together and that their people are culturally sort of interchangeable.

Yeah .... I know neither statement is true, but a lot of folks out there are geographically ignorant. (A talk-show host here ... Jay Leno does a bit called "Jay-Walking" from time to time, where he quizzes them on things you would think most people would know. Then, he does an in-studio bit called "Jay-Walk Allstars."

Those people (and some of them are TEACHERS in this country) couldn't pick out China on a map of the world ... and one thought that Antarctica was Australia.

Well, to try my damnedest to stretch myself to a diplomatic fairness no matter how far beyond any reasonable degree of rationality, Antarctica once was Australia, or vice-versa but I suspect that the person wasn't old enough to have been around then.

Cheers,

I think you are misusing dogleg.

Verb

to dogleg (third-person singular simple present doglegs, present participle doglegging, simple past and past participle doglegged)

1. (intransitive) To bend in the shape of the hind leg of a dog.

I thought that sounded wrong to me too. When I use the term "dogleg" to describe walking somewhere, it means the opposite .... that I took sort of the long way around ... as in "I took the dogleg route" .... the exact opposite of a short cut.
