I mean, the purpose of your program is to view already existing images, so the "screenshot" feature is of limited use. And for the "once every 5 years" need of actually taking a screenshot, there already is a well-known procedure, which works across the entire device.

Don't get me wrong: I know it's cool to find an implement new features. But if at some point that ends up in a feature-laden applications with tons of menus and submenus for seldomly-used features, it may actually be counter-productive because it makes the application unnecessarily complex and harder to use for the end user. Just sayin'
I was thinking the same thing...

Screenshot it's just a proof of concept: looking in the waf folder led me to that message-sender command and I thought about using it to take a screenshot.
Personally, I sometimes use it, expecially in landscape mode where what's on display is a portion of the real image. I find it easier than cutting the original image.
Anyway, as it's only one button, it could be hidden in a second!

As regards the rest of the app, every day it is becoming more complex due to feature requests.
I use only the basic ones (bookmark, jump to...) but as I use this "project" to learn about kindle/html/javascript, I accept all suggestions (and it means that it is used by, at least, another fool besides me).

What I really want to implement is a basic image post processing to change lightness and contrast as I find difficoult to read colour comics.

In the end, I don't think (hope) there are any other features to add!

EDIT: I forgot to thank you! I really need someone to raise these problems as I'm still total noob!

With the recent find of the image viewer, are you going to continue updating this app?

Yes, I'll continue developing this "app"! I want to add a sort of image post processing as stated before, image renaming and I'll try to support cbz or zip.
I'll keep on working till Amazon Image Viewer will become really a comic book reader.
Then I'll just sit, relax and enjoy the new software!!

(another dream is to make this app a kindlet....)

The new "image viewer" that comes with the last release: sucks...
Trust me, I had tried and this silver's app it's a lot better, at least for comic/manga reading...

We're waiting for the next release...

The image viewer in the older kindles (even the K4) has a menu with a lot more features. It does suck that these are missing on the K5.

I'm about to release the new version.

Just a fast question.
I fixed the empty folders problem but do you prefer to keep track of the parent directory in the folders name or not?

Refer to this image:

you can see a folder without parent directory (i.e ..../Gallery/Alan Ford 497) and a folder with parent directory (i.e. ..../Gallery/Jesus Christ/01 - A hollow cost).

Do you prefer to see:

Code:
Jesus Christ/01 - A hollow cost
or only:

Code:
01 - A hollow cost
????

Personally, I'd prefer the first way: you can have a parent directory with the comic name and subfolders with only the number.

PS Sorry for the comic book's choice!!

I like seeing the folders, so I can use shorter file names without horizontal scrolling.

If you show only the first few letters of the folder, it would be nice to see a popup with the full name (using multiple lines if necessary). That would leave more room for the file name, but still make the folder name viewable.

Ok. To sum up:
- it's better to see the parent folder
- it would be even better to have it shortened and to view it if wanted

I'll think about it for the next release: it affects a critic part of the app, i.e. the fact of not being able to get out of the damn WAF to actually read files!

IMAGE GALLERY V1.6

***************README***************
The waf is made to be integrated with Yifan Lu Launcher.
You need to jailbreak your Kindle and to install the launcher.
If anyone wants to work on it and make it better, just post the results here for everyone.
************************************

************NEW FEATURES*************

What's new:
- 5.1.0 firmware is fully supported
- manage bookmarks has a dropdown menu to delete single bookmarks
- welcome message is shown only once (during first time loading)
- exit button (just a proof of concept)
- titlebar is now your friend: while reading it shows current folder and page ==> no more info button! The rest of the time, it shows where you are (home, manage bookmarks)
- change image width and then choose wheather to change lenght or not
- lock and unlock image size after resize (otherwise it will reset itself every time you change page as I intended it to be used only for a few pages)
- one time rotation in portrait mode: displays the current image in landscape mode but it doesn't add the scrolldown button on the bottom of the page. Going to next/prev image reset it to portrait!
- take screenshots: they are saved to kindle's USB mount directory
- landscape mode is back: no need to change orientation before running the app, it changes by itself when landscape mode is choosen
- landscape mode is now full of dropdown menus: no more text inputs!!
- empty folders (i.e. without jpg or png) won't be displayed: you can organize your comics in subfolders
- small interface improvements
- few code improvements
- ...something else I don't remember (as usual...)
************************************

************HOW TO INSTALL************

DIFFERENTIAL UPDATE (if you installed the previous version):
- remove every file and folder in /extensions/imagegallery/bin
- unzip 1.6_differential_update.zip to /extensions/imagegallery/bin

PLAIN INSTALL:
Just unzip imagegallery folder contained in 1.6_plain_install.zip to the extensions folder.
Restart your Kindle.
You'll find "Install Image Gallery" in launcher menu.
Tap on it: it adds all the necessary to the appreg.db.
After doing it, it returns to the kindle home.
Replace /extensions/imagegallery/menu.json with /extensions/imagegallery/bin/menu.json
Create a folder called "Gallery" in documents ==> /documents/Gallery
You can now see "Image Gallery" in the launcher menu: this runs the WAF.
*************************************

************HOW TO USE**************
Just add your images in /documents/Gallery/ organized in folders and/or subfolders.
Images MUST be named from 0 (i.e: 0 1 2 3 4 5....)
They can be jpg or png.
************************************

************STILL TO DO************
- add image post processing (change contrast and lightness)
- cbz or zip support
- built-in files renamer
- bring back pinch-to-zoom
- improve "choose folder" dropdown menu as suggested by Geekmaster here
*********************************

*********RESIZE FUNCTION**********
While reading, you can resize the image.
Tapping "change image size" in reading menu displays a prompt box: insert a percentage (without % symbol) to resize the image.
N.B 20 means 20% of the original size, 120 means 120% of the original size i.e. 20% bigger.
Than, you can choose wheather to change lenght by the same percentage or not.
If you choosed to enlarge the image, you'll see 4 arrows: tapping on theme will scroll the image.
They fade after 2 seconds; to bring them back, double tap anywhere (not too fast!).
You can now lock the image size: going prev/next/jump doesn't reset the dimension.
Moreover, you can unlock the image size.
Finally, you can reset image dimension without going to next or prev image.
*********************************

EDIT: Firmwares before 5.1.0 are no longer supported as I have only one Kindle with 5.1.0!!

EDIT_2: Start.sh file should now work...Thanks to thomass and deep!

EDIT_3: PLEASE USE THIS MEDIAFIRE LINK TO DOWNLOAD IMAGEGALLERY:

Side note: I know that you have thought about this a few times before. So how about developing a Kindlet with the same functionality?

On the down side: It will again be totally different, and it will most likely require to write everything from scratch again, in a different programming language with totally different programming paradigms.

On the up side: Java still seems to be the language of choice for "official" Kindle/Kindlet development. And (I'm only speaking for myself here) it is the most productive programming language I have seen so far ("productive" in the sense of "amount of correctly functioning code per developer hour", because it is clearly specified, has a huge and very well-documented built-in system library, and there are lots of external libraries around, if needed). And last but not least, it's currently the language that has the highest demand for professional developers (at least in Europe).

That said, your effort, and the result of it, is really great! Especially if, as you have been saying a few times, you have started this without knowing anything about it in the first place, and are actually learning as you go. You are the kind of person that this forum needs, and I wish that everybody's mindset here was like yours.

Thank you for your contribution.

I agree with ixtab. Except for recommending the Java part, mostly because I do not have enough experience using it to recommend it, but it sounds like I should use it more (I can code C in my sleep). A lot of my code runs in small processors that do not even have C++, and certainly not Java. But I certainly do agree that we need you silver18, so keep up the great work.
