Full Shut Down

When using Full Shutdown from the Settings Menu, you are supposed to press the Mark Button. If you fail to do that, it could get frozen.

My Full Shutdown takes 30 seconds and booting up from Full Shutdown also takes 30 seconds. I timed it.

So far its been 15 days and my 505 is still at 4 bars. I turn it on only once or twice per week for various reasons.

By the way, when it is first purchased, I notice on the first cycle it dropped from 4 bars to zero bars in just a few hours. Since then it lasts a long time.

If you connect the charger (not USB), does the red LED light up?
What happens if you press reset and then toggle the power switch? Does the LED blink at all?

Connecting the power did light up the red LED. Pushing in the reset button and toggling the power switch did reboot the device. Thanks for your help!

Now my question: did I do something to crash it? Or is the device defective?

Did that. Froze right after hitting mark.

Wading through the menus and shutting down takes 26 seconds (I can live with that). Booting up from full shutdown takes 71 seconds. Too long for me.

Second timing test.

I took out my stopwatch and concentrated on getting the exact time. It took 60 seconds to boot up from a Full Shut Down and 26 seconds to shut down again.

When I was just shutting it off in Standby, my battery went from 4 bars to 1 bar in 16 to 18 days. Using Full Shutdown I am now on day 16 of this cycle and am still at 4 bars.

In my opinion, one should only use the Standby Shut Down when reading and turning off constantly during the day. If one is going to go a few days without turning on the Reader, one should use Full Shut Down. 60 seconds to boot up is not material for me. It would take longer than that to find a book in a library, open it and turn to the page where one left a manual bookmark. It takes longer than that to boot up my PC or to open eBook Library or MS Reader and find a page in a book where one left off.

I can confirm that using a Sony memory stick (2GB) seems to have no effect on battery life. With a memory stick in (though not reading from it), I lost about a bar a week with daily use. Contrasted with a bar a day with a 2GB SD card in.

Hi,

I bought a Sony Reader from ebay that was originally purchased in December. I noticed that the battery bars only last about 500-600 page turns. I am not using an SD card at all. Is this normal? Do you think that since my reader was originally from December, it might have been part of the "bad run of batteries" mentioned early in this thread? How much can I realistically expect if I don't use an SD card, do not power down (just suspend) and read semi-continuously (so not lying around for days at a time)?

I was hoping more in the range of like 5000+ page turns, but it seems to be more like 2000 for me.

ETA: while originally purchased in December, the unit was sold as New in Box and as far as I can tell, it is indeed unused.

Make sure you have the latest firmware update.

Hmm--I thought there were no firmware updates for the 505 yet? Maybe I'm mistaken.. off to check!

Oh, I just saw the numbers "500" in the message and somehow missed the "originally purchased" text. If it's a 505 then it's indeed likely a battery/hardware problem.

Hmm, OK.. I guess we'll find out if I can still use the warranty without having been the original purchaser (no receipts, although the owner still has them). Still covered by the manufacturer's warranty, and I also had an XChange Card included, but I'm seriously very skeptical of the XChange Card after having paid extra because of this extended warranty, because the website is down...

Are you adding books via the Sony software, or some other method, as the former (and only the former) does the formatting as part of transferring to the device, which might be significant?

I am using Calibre, so the device does the formatting. I think I'm going to charge to full and do a test just by turning pages over and over until a bar runs out, before I contact sony.

Battery draining in approx 2 weeks of not using

I've got mine now halve a year, but since i have it drains the battery without using in approx 10-14days... Never been able to read a complete book on a full charge either. And i am not using the memory card readers...

Wish they had an option like holding the power button for complete shutdown instead of going in sleep mode.

Using memory cards (especiallySDs) reduce your battery charge life by factor even if you not reading from the card but it just inserted. If you reading it reduces even more.
Some cards are more power hungry then others ...
