First person present tense can lead to impossible perspectives. I bought Hunger Games, but haven't gotten around to reading it yet. The book gegins with waking up, but in a first person present tense, that is peculiar. People are a bit groggy when they first wake up, and a first person present tense is that character's perspective at that instant, so that perspective should be as groggy as is the character. But it isn't, which makes it peculiar.
I don't mind first person, I'm reading the Barsoom books, and they are in first person, but past tense. I do generally prefer third person. |
