Not to mention those who have engaged in multi-million dollar price fixing schemes, or those who have been found guilty of stealing royalties not paid onwards to artists. And let's not even get into the subject of fraudulent banking. Glad to see they all will be facing jail time. That should give the right impression to "young, impressionable minds" alright.

Why are people always try to shift discussions of one crime to discussions of other crimes? That really smacks of 'justification' along the lines of: "look that guy over there did something much worse, so what I did should be ok". There is no connection, other people's misdeed are no excuse for something we do ourselves.

There is a fair degree of sarcasm in the last post or two.

Stonetools is of the belief that jail time for theft (there is that word again) of a song or movie or ebook is just perfect for young minds.

Give 'em all a criminal record and associate with real criminals he reckons. That'll learn 'em!

Don't you think that stonetools exaggerated to make a point, too? The point being that you should not just let people get away with it because it is "no big deal". Obviously we all (meaning all of us who think that illegal downloading is a crime) believe that fines are the way to go, except for big-time repeat offenders.

That's of course if everyone is included, from those who once downloaded a single song or album, to those maxing out their 50Mbps connections 24/7/365.
I used the official UK government figures. 7 million unauthorised downloaders, 70 million population.

Hmmm, criminal record, 2-5 years gaol. Spend time with those excellent role models that house invade, beat up senior citizens or kick people in the head while they are unconscious on the ground.
Those people would need to be released early to make room for the sudden influx of millions of ebook downloaders. So all they would learn would be where the best places to download are.

Illegal downloading is a civil, not a criminal offence. It does not carry a jail term.

The MPAA (and all the other *AA's) would dearly love to make it a criminal offence. I'm sure their political "donation" money is hard at work as we speak.

Interesting. I've no idea how the government comes up with that figure, but I very much doubt that it's correct. I can see it being lower than here, since I'm fairly sure Britain's got a lower proportion of computer owners/users, but 10% seems entirely too low to me.

Apart from anything else, have you thought about the logistics of putting 10% of the population in jail? Taxes would need to increase by a massive amount to pay for it. You're talking about £40,000 per year for each prisoner, and that's not including the cost of building all the new prisons you would need to fit them all in. Or the cost of policing the internet and gathering together enough evidence to convince a jury of their guilt.
Keep your inflated sense of outrage pants on. I'm talking about jail time for flagrant offenders- just like jail time for running a counterfeiting operation, moneylaundering scheme, or any major white collar criminal operation. Running a major pirate site is similar to that.
I have some sympathy for the casual downloader. Heck, he's been taught by folks like you that violating some poor artist's IP rights is virtually an entitlement, like breathing. But I have no sympathy whatsover for the likes of Mr. Kim dotcom and the folks who run TPB. The hammer can't come down fast or hard enough. They've f**ked over far too many hardworking artists . Let justice be done, though the pirate enablers wail.

So you support jail time for the record company executives who stole artist royalties, for the fraudsters at Goldman Sachs et.al and, of course, for the BPH CEO's when they are found guilty of conspiracy? All major white collar criminal operations.
