Any discs I own are riped and stored on my XBMC based HTPC. Any that I rent (a rarity) or check out from the library are watched in XBMC which skips all the unskipable crap and goes straight to the menu.

It isn't just the people who don't know how, but also those who couldn't be bothered. You're talking for some people, it may be a couple hours learning how, trial and error, etc. For many people, they'd rather just deal with the stupid stuff.

It isn't threatening or intimidation. It is just annoyance. We've bought the movie legally, so why should we be forced to be reminded that not buying the movie is bad? If I thought not buying the movie was good, I'd not have bought the movie in the first place, and not see the warnings anyway. It really just is preaching to the choir.

People complain about the selection on Netflix but Redbox has new release DVDs of movies and Netflix has a lot of great stuff for instant streaming. From silent movies (loves me some early Fritz Lang) to Let the Right One In, etc. I mostly stream TV shows, though. I love the British Being Human and comedies like Black Books (wish there were more) and the IT Crowd.
I buy a lot of movies, and use Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, and Redbox. with the nondisk services, we don't get hammered with warnings, because they know we're being legal in the first place.

I suppose people can start using the warning message as "fetch your drinks" time.

That would be *awesome.* Why do I think it's never going to happen that way?
But, most people do that while they're up, putting the disk in the player, etc. Most people get drinks and snacks, put the disk in, then sit down, grab the remote and start the movie.

I see it as preaching to as big a group as possible, including the choir.

Casual sharers will see it when the first watch the movie, or watch their own copy, Some pirated copies do in fact leave the warning visible for whatever reason, and real pirates may see it when they rip the disk, but may also see it on some other disks they may have in their collection (presumably shoplifted from a store) and start having pangs of guilt...well that's the theory anyway, I a guess.

I really don't think it helps in any but a most trivial way.
But I have no objection to the idea of being reminded about the law. There are folks who will claim they didn't know distributing copies of movies to all their friends was any kind of violation, and I'm not personally insulted by the effort to inform and dissuade people from violating copyright.

I am annoyed at yet another piece of unskippable junk I'm forced to sit though, same as the ads, previews and pointlessly long menu sequences.

Simple as that for me.

Copyright warning: Meh.
Unskippable 20 seconds of copyright warning: Hrmph.
That on top of several minutes of other unskippable nonsense: ARRRRGGG!

People who claim they didn't know it was illegal usually say that only after they've been caught, and are being dragged into court (and that usually is only people who share stuff online). The people who share stuff online share files that no longer have the copyright warnings, because the pirates get annoyed and remove it. How many people even know how to duplicate DVDs, but do so without downloading or uploading the video? The casual sharer who does so online, and doesn't just loan out their original disk, is an extreme minority.

I like the previews. It's how I know what other movies are available.

They're only nice the first time or two. Previews are *awful* on old favorites that you rewatch many times.

I like previews on my DVDs as well - but not unskippable ones. Never encountered them and hope I never will.

There's no problem if they are on the disc as an "extra" I can select to watch (or not to watch - mostly I do look at them at least once...).

When I first started getting DVDs, 12 years ago, all of the ones I was getting would have a trailers section in the Extras, where they would have the trailer for the movie you were watching, as well as for other movies that "you may also like". I thought that was cool, and would always watch them at least once (especially on the older movies). Lately, my fiance and I have been watching Castle on DVD (I've been trying to introduce her to shows I like. We've seen Doctor Who, Titus, Walking Dead, Torchwood, Battlestar Galactica, etc), and at the start of each disk is about 10 minutes worth of crap you have to wade through, some being unskippable. Seeing as how some of the disks have only 2 episodes on them, I'm switching out and having to deal with this again after only an hour and a half.

What I find really funny are the ads about Bluray. Castle isn't available on Bluray, so why are you telling me about it? Are you trying to rub it in? Even more so, is the ads for bluray, on bluray movies. For those I'm just like "Yeah, I know Bluray is awesome, that's why I bought it in Bluray".
