Unfortunately true. Oh well, only time we have to sit through those anymore is when we want to watch a purchased Blu-ray right away and pop it in the PS3. Most of the time, we wait until I've ripped the Blu-ray to the file server and can skip all the crap that.

Netflix. Or Redbox. It has been a couple of years since I bought a DVD. I'm not doing BlueRay.

People complain about the selection on Netflix but Redbox has new release DVDs of movies and Netflix has a lot of great stuff for instant streaming. From silent movies (loves me some early Fritz Lang) to Let the Right One In, etc. I mostly stream TV shows, though. I love the British Being Human and comedies like Black Books (wish there were more) and the IT Crowd.

I'll ocassionally buy a DVD if it's something special or just a really good deal, but otherwise I'm right with you. NF + RB is a great combination of quick access to big new releases, and broad selection of the obscure.

However, disks from RB will often have the same issues discussed here--unskippable annoying dead weight before the movie--though sometimes the rental-only disks aren't as bad.

Right and at least you haven't bought the whole thing, just rented it, so it doesn't leave as bitter a taste. Heh.

Oh, two I will really have to think about buying are the last 2 Harry Potters, which I still don't have though I have the earlier ones, and the Hobbit movies, after they come out.

How long does it take to rip a DVD to remove the warnings? Surely more than 20 seconds.

Let's save some trouble:

But you can do other things while the rip is going on...

But you can do other things while the warnings are playing...

fbone is missing the point. It's not merely a matter of saving time, it's a matter of saving annoyance.

(that's aaide from the time arguments that the 20 second recurs each time you watch the film, and the rip only happens once, and the rip happens when you chose to do it, the message delays happen when you really would prefer to be watching the movie.

And the 20 seconds for the warnings are in ADDITION to whatever other garbage might be foisted on you before the move (see the chart above.)

It is in fact very possible that the one-time expenditure of starting the rip is indeed shorter than the time you're forced to see ads and promos before one single viewing.

*sigh* I have at least 2 copies of every Potter movie.

LOTR, I have 3 copies each (DVD, DVD Extended Edition, Blu-ray Extended Edition).

Around 5~10 minutes. If it was just the text-only FBI warning, it wouldn't even be annoying. It's the 5-6 unskippable 2-3 minute trailers as well as the same old piracy is evil skit that really bugs the hell out of me. I'd consider ripping break-even. I rip all my (purchased) movies anyway since I have a local streaming set-up.

Something like this:

Instead of a warning, wouldn't it make way more sense to have something like this:

"Thanks for buying a copy of this movie! By buying this movie rather than pirating it, you're helping support the actors, actresses, writers and others that make this movie and others like it possible."

If you're only going to watch it once, ripping to remove the warnings is pointless. If you're going to watch it every other Saturday for the next three months with a different pack of friends each time, it's not.

I suppose people can start using the warning message as "fetch your drinks" time.

That would be *awesome.* Why do I think it's never going to happen that way?

I think it would be equally effective. Which is to say, not at all.

Old but still so very true. This sort of thing made me gnash my teeth knowing full well that I was the mug who had paid good money to see this bull while a pirate was watching the movie already. As a result I have simply dropped out of the market. I don't buy DVDs, I don't download movies, I have even unhooked the TVs. Only the kids are using it know for the PS3 and for their DVDs.

If I were from the US I would also be offended by the very poor design of these government badges/seals, that look as if they had been designed by a 12 yr. old boy.
Here in Germany we have some non-skippable admonishment that consists of two kids with their mama singing "happy birthday to you", then showing the viewer that they are singing it below the window of a prison cell, with the little girl asking "how long until papa is back?". While it is modestly funny the first time, by the third time viewing you simply want to slay everyone responsible for producing this annoyance.

When it boils down to "if you copy this movie, we will bankrupt you and destroy your life", yeah, it's threats and intimidation. Especially when you put it in front of the innocent.

This is part of the reason why I don't watch many movies. The experience simply isn't pleasurable with the warnings and advertising.

But hey, it's entertainment. I don't have to watch it so I don't have to give them my money. Why waste time pirating?

This. It's at least a big part of why I read instead of watching movies.
