For me, the only thing that matters is the screen quality. Other features are not essential, I consider my Kindle as a book, so I don't expect too much features, I have a Kindle Fire for other purposes.
So I will upgrade only if they come up with a better screen. From K2 to K3, the screens technology was upgraded (from E-Ink Vizplex to E-Ink Pearl), but from K3 to K4/5, there is no change in screen technology. Some people even complain about the quality of K4 vs K3 and K5. |

I'll only upgrade if my current k3 breaks. I have been using my k3 for 2-3 hours everyday since Oct 2010. So far still going strong.

I mostly upgrade when something breaks. But that really goes in spurts. My daughter and I were happily using our k1s - I left mine on the train, and she broke hers. Got a K2, and sold both the old. Then, happily going along with K2s, until I saw the nicer resolution with the K3. Well, I got the K3, and I left everyone else with the K2s (I read more than they do). My husband left his on the plane, my daughter broke hers, so everyone had K3s. Well, I had to get the K4, and the KF, just because. My daughter broke another one, and I got her a K4. She thought the KF was the next one, so I imagine that will break, soon.
Whatever the next one is, I will probably get it. I am really, really salivating over that Nook Glow |

No kidding! Only parents who are desparate for her to find a love of reading would keep buying them for her. And what did she do with the Hunger Games? Which were on her kindle? Asked for them in paper format so she could dog ear the pages.

Well I said I was going to wait, but when Walmart had that K4 deal with a $30 gift card last week, I went for it. So far so good. I ordered an Incipio cover so I should be all set for awhile....unless Amazon makes a move, LOL.

There's a few things that would make me consider switching, a crisper screen, less refresh rates, more setting options like fonts/sizes/text alignment, the ability to get books from a library (I don't believe you can do this in Canada), and a lighter weight with an ability to have a built-in light, SD card slot. Mainly, the weight/built in light and clarity of screen would be most important. However I'm one of those people that really wants to store a ton of stuff on my device so the SD option is an extremely compelling feature. Oh, and the ability for your collections be be actual folders, at the moment when I plug my Kindle to the computer and have a look it's a train wreck of files.
There's still a lot of things in its favour, the free 3G (useful for me when on vacation and my phone would be roaming), the ease of the buttons and their positioning, the keyboard and the cover working together to be a good height when balancing on my chest while the cover being sturdy enough to hold it up in bed - where I do most of my reading. The Soney Reader looks really crisp, with an SD slot, almost tempting but missing 3G so not worth it. Last edited by Lafiel; 05-09-2012 at 04:55 PM. |

I honestly don't plan on upgrading until my K3 breaks. I did buy the KT and play with it for a little while, but I didn't like it, so I resold it to a friend for near the same price I bought it for. Honestly, the newest generation seem like massive downers. I would like it if a new version of the Kindle was similar to the K3 in all respects, but with an SD card slot.
Honestly, if my K3 breaks, I'll probably look at getting a Sony PRS-T1. The only thing holding me back is that I'd be frightened of "breaking" my books if I tried to strip the DRM and convert them to ePub; I've invested too much money into my current eBooks. |

In the rare case that something went screwy enough to worry about, you could manually fix the epub. Personally, I go between formats in both directions all the time and have never had a problem. Even the other direction, if I occasionally lost some epub only feature when converting to mobi, I never noticed it. |

I think the main thing that would tempt me to get a new Kindle would be a plastic or metal backplane with as good or better contrast. Essentially, I want a robust Kindle. One with a screen that won't shatter. |

Future-proof your books now, while the tools are working, whether or not you convert to ePub.
