A first book by a new author... I figured that there was no reason for people to want to pay a lot for it. .99 cents lets people pick it up just to check out what it is, which is what I was going for.
I'm flattered to see people suggesting higher prices, but I'm old enough to remember when a paperback book was 2 or 3 dollars, so I like the idea of low-price books, and e-books allow for low prices. My next full length book (probably a sequel to Hegemony) will probably be more than .99 cents, but my next work (in a setting unrelated to Hegemony,) which is novella-length, will probably be pretty low cost as well. Meanwhile, anyone who liked Hegemony, reviews are greatly appreciated... |

I'm getting the same book at a discount and DRM-free. Plus I'm paying the author for his work more directly (my understanding is that while paper books give <20% to the author I've heard that Amazon was >70%). The value is there, I don't need to be cheap. Authors have to eat too. I'd use the tip jar if he had one, I enjoyed his book! |

Working on getting the book published on Smashwords...
[Moderator combined posts:] As far as I can tell, Hegemony is now available on Smashwords, though it's still awaiting review for inclusion into the Premium Catalog. Also, Amazon should soon have a slightly revised version (same as the Smashwords version) and (if I understand Amazon's policies correctly) everyone who bought a kindle version will be able to get the updated version at no extra cost. Great, when it is, I will buy it.
Oh and feel free to send me a private notification so I am sure to remember to look for it. -- Bill Last edited by bill_mchale; 05-14-2012 at 04:05 PM. |

I did enjoy the book! I like the updated cover, but I don't think I need to download it again. On another topic, if you ever need more covers I know a talented artist that makes covers. http://ferelwing.zenfolio.com/ , maybe she can make you a sci-fi one. |

Making something the right price sells it. That's what he's doing.
However, to turn against my own argument slightly, there is a business case to be be made for pricing FUTURE books at $2.99, because Amazon gives a far bigger royalty share at $2.99...that's when it jumps from 30% to 70%. You'll make more money by selling to fewer people...but you WILL sell to to fewer people. If the goal is to get a fan base. 99 cents is the right price. For a first book, free might even be better. |

Demosthenex,
Thanks for the artist info. I'll look in to it. Also, I greatly appreciate the compliment implicit in what you did. Thank you. |

Ok, I picked up a copy on smashword the other night. I will try to move it as close to the top of my reading queue as possible.
Hopefully more than just the mobileread community will be exposed to it because you put it on smashwords. I think they also will get the book on B&N, Kobo and Sony for you (Not sure about Google Play). -- Bill |

To people who've read the book,
I'd be very grateful for any feedback and/or reviews Obviously I'd prefer positive feedback, but thoughtful criticism would be useful too if that's what you've got... (after I get over sputtering about it to myself...) So if anyone wants to write a (hopefully positive) review on smashwords or amazon, or in a discussion here on these forums, please, go ahead. ![]() |

Well, after getting used to uploaded human minds and bioavatars, I loved this novel. Cannot wait for more in the series.

Very glad that you liked it. There is a sequel in the works, but it is likely to take some time to finish. The next thing I publish is probably going to be an unrelated story set in a very different setting, though.
