Thank you, Orlok. Too kind.
I'm off to bed shortly, so just what will probably be a quickie; Who was the first person to win Nobel Prizes for both Chemistry and Physics? |

Here is a quick quiz. A baby was born in England on March 5th, but on April 25th of the next year the baby was still under a year old. How is this possible?
BTW, leap years do not play a role in the answer. (Edit: At least not directly.) Last edited by Daithi; 05-08-2012 at 06:37 PM. |

Marie Curie won for both Chemistry and Physics, but I don't know if she was the first to do so.

The baby was born under the old calendar (pre-1752), when New Year's Day was Lady Day, 25 March.

Before 1752, the New Year was on March 25th. Also the calendar used in England and its colonies was 11 days out-of-sync with the Gregorian Calendar. When they decided to re-sync the calendar with the Sun they also moved the start of the year to January 1st. Getting the calendar in sync actually took a couple steps. So-- December 31, 1750 followed by January 1, 1750 (Jan. was the 10th month) March 24, 1750 followed by March 25, 1751 (Mar. 25th was the New Year) December 31, 1751 followed by January 1, 1752 (1st change) September 2, 1752 followed by September 14, 1752 (2nd change dropped 11 days) Last edited by Daithi; 05-08-2012 at 07:38 PM. |

Yes, fascinating stuff, Daithi! I've a few genealogical lines that I've traced beyond the calendar change, and it can complicate things.
![]() A quick question based on yours: what's the connection between the answer to Daithi's question and The Lord of the Rings? |
