That looks like an excellent book, which I'll have to check out. I am currently working my way through Richard Evans' trilogy on the Third Reich. I enjoy reading older history books, you can get a different feel for things that way.

Also Try...In the Garden of Beasts....It is about the American Ambassador to Germany and his Family in 1933 and 1934 as Hitler rose to power...and it shows many of the characters of the Reich in a different style to the usual historical work...

I am really getting away from WWI, which is where I started. I guess that isn't true, I started with Japaness history, then moved into WWI. I moved to the intervening years of WWI to WWII, because I was trying to understand just how the Hitler came to power. |

Have to admit, I'd have a hard time choosing 5 specific books. That's kinda the point of my kindle, so I always have something to read, even when I'm in a fickle mood.
I'd probably have to narrow it down to a few series, and then I'd pick a book from those series, but not going to worry about that specificity here: Patrick O'brian's Aubrey/Maturin series Robert Jordan's Wheel of time series Anne McCaffrey's Pern series George Martin's A song of ice and fire Not sure what series the 5th book would come from, maybe Jim Butcher's Dresden Files (or possibly, Nathan Lowell's Solar Clipper series). |

I'd have to have some big omnibus non-fiction, either a concise encyclopedia or, in a pinch, a world almanac.
Some scifi, some mystery for cheap escape. And some excruciating classics, to slow me down, and give me a sense of accomplishment when I finally finish them off. Top it off with a giant short story collection. Truth is put me on an island long enough and I'll be writing my own stories just to have something to read. |

I think it's necessary to choose books that one has already re-read at least once.
With Kidnapped/Catriona just missing the list. Naturally, if we were allowed big omnibus editions, add in The Hobbit, The Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales to LoTR, The rest of Jane Austen's novels to Pride and Prejudice and finally, The Tombs of Atuan and The Furthest Shore to A Wizard of Earthsea. I would take The Middle-Earth Universe series.

I've got a k3 too, and I can just imagine tapping out a novel in 7Dragons Notepad, one painful keystroke at a time, across multiple files... yeah, that'd give me something to do while stranded on a desert island!

Just added A Wizard of Earthsea to the T.B.R., looks interesting. Last edited by pdurrant; 05-06-2012 at 05:31 PM. Reason: fixed quote tags |
