Well, some of those Heechee e-books can be bought from the Baen store, for what was a fairly reasonable $4 per title when the special introductory discount bundle* price was still active (and now $5 separately for DRM-free MultiFormat available worldwide).

The problem is convincing whoever's currently sitting on the remaining rights for the rest of the titles (apparently not the nonagenarian author) to allow them to bring out the rest for an affordable price. Until then, it's the darknet for you, me hearties!

* Pohl's autobiography in that bundle, by the way, is excellent.

Presumably you could read them them when you bought them. Did the books come with a guarantee of accessibility in perpetuity? Do you expect that any purchase will remain viable for you, no matter what the vicissitudes of life or the ravages of time?

I have all of the Buchanan Westerns in DTB and they are not available as ebooks. I am getting ready to send them all off to have them scanned. I just have to figure out which of company I want to use. There are two or three here used by members.

I'm trying to remember when the last time I bought a dead tree version of a book. It's certainly been well over a year. The vast majority of new books that I want to read come out as ebooks. My biggest issue if getting ebook versions of older books, most of which I already own in paper or hardback. They are slowly coming out.

Terrific, Elfwreck.

I am too lazy to get off the couch (reading time is reading time, darn it). I log into my library's site and reserve the DTB, then I read something else.

I don't know if anyone has mentioned it yet, but with some publishers you can request that it be put out as an ebook. I know Amazon has a link you can click on if a book isn't yet available as an ebook "I'd really like to read this book on a kindle" or some such wording. You could try writing the publisher about it as well I'd guess. Of course a lot of people are going to want an ebook and will pirate a copy if there isn't a legit ebook available. Sometimes it's a new book, but often I think people do it with books they own as a convenience. why lug around a thick heavy DTB copy if you can put it on an ereader.

I borrow the physical books from the library if they are absolutely not available or are too expensive as e-books.

I take both my Kindle and some hard copy books and magazines on my trips. Paper is also more practical for reading in the tub or on the beach on a windy day. I think it's wise never to be vulnerable to a single point of failure when it comes to keeping myself mentally engaged.
I use that air-travel time to knit. I originally bought my e-reader because I was headed out on a three-week road trip; given my reading speed and the amount of free time I anticipated for reading, I would have had to pack about 25-30 books to be sure I had enough for the trip... and I would have had to anticipate what I wanted to read two weeks from the departure date. Having my e-reader loaded up, mostly with public-domain freebies and some other freebies, plus (ahem) a few pirated titles given to me by an acquaintance, which I already owned p-book copies of, meant that all I had to pack for reading was one slim device. That left more room for yarn and knitting needles (my other necessity, and one for there can be no virtual substitute.)

Since then, I've come to love my e-reader, but I still read plenty of p-books, both my own copies and those from the library. When I find one I want to own in p-book format, I buy it, either new or used.
