For cores, try adding a corn app, a private well and oil/gas field. Those are about the cheapest to buy and upgrade, that I've noticed.

I've just now hit a point where I've balanced energy & population; at my next cycle, I should be able to increase pop substantially and have the energy to cover it. Sometime tomorrow I should have enough money to jump to level 9 and start getting Thorium Reactors.

Worth noting: If you're running just about matched for energy & pop--as in, not in the red, but not much green--when you jump levels, you'll need [population] extra energy points. (Which is obvious from the "Energy needs = Population * Level" equation, but I hadn't consciously sorted out how that played out when increasing levels.)

So now I'm planning for that, trying to make sure I have excess energy points or unsurged energy assets when I go up my next level to cover for that.

That's what I'm still struggling with - I'm constantly in the red for Energy, and can't seem to get back into green. Trouble is, every time you level up, the multiplier comes into play (pop x level no.), requiring a big jump in Energy levels.

Wait a couple of days and keep surging Energy to build up a surplus. I've currently got 88,000 above my base need for level 6.

You can catch up; it's just tempting to level up when you can. Consider waiting a couple of extra cycles--and rearranging your board, because it's cheaper at lower levels.

Radiation Shield is your best bang-for-buck until you get to Thorium Reactors at level 9. Put some on quickcharge spots.

Make sure you have military equal to at least 20% of your Bliss, because Whacks cost Military based on a percentage of Bliss. (Usually 1%; a few are 5%.) Make sure you have extra--and don't hesitate to ask around if you're short; military gifts are common. Bliss gifts are *very* common; almost everyone has Bliss to offload.

Whack costs aren't all based on a % of Bliss. They can also be based on % of bucks (I just had one that cost 21K military to get rid of). Not sure if they're based on other things as well.

I've had a couple of whacks which seemed to be % of Military to pay off.

Ack, that sounds nasty.

Do we know how long you can safely let a Whack sit there? Do you have the option of not paying when you see it, going to find resources, and then paying it? (I've never had to avoid paying to make one go away.)
