I manage all the books for my husband (who uses my Sony), my son (who has a K4) and me (k3). All our books are in Calibre. I don't think my son knows how to turn on the wifi on his k4 (nor does he seem to care. he's asked about buying his own books, but we haven't given him his own account yet). DH doesn't care much about the ebook world at all, prefers paper books, but I've got a couple of books he wants to read that are only available in e-format.

On the whole, I'd really rather not have either husband or son see some of the covers of the books I read. not that either would be shocked, but probably embarrassed. Heck, *I* am embarrassed by some of the covers, and I mostly only read straight romances (and romantic suspense). But I really can live without Fabio and his heirs.

One thing I haven't liked about the Nook is the form factor in terms of accessories. Have you ever been irked by how a sleek electronic device often comes in a bulky box? That's what Nook covers are to the ST out of the box.

I made a point of getting a really nice cover for my grillfiend's ST, but it effectively makes a thick rectangle out of a thin curved device. Besides which, the closure mechanism's pants. I haven't even thought about acquiring a light because the covers are such an added nuisance.

As for the ads, I'd root the ST if it were mine, but some people don't want to do that. And it's those people who will often find the ads tiresome.

I like many things about the Nook, but when it comes to second-gen Pearl-screened e-readers with roughly the same specs, ergonomics are everything. No point in buying a reader that becomes less convenient when protected if others in its class do not. No point in settling for a compromised out-of-box experience if, realistically, you're unwilling to root to attain a better one.

On the nether hind, if you don't care about cases, won't need a light (because of the Glowlight) and have no issue with rooting, then an ST is a fun reader to own. I particularly like changing the fonts and margins on the fly. Something about the implementation reminds me of remedial desktop publishing.

I'll tell you this. I own both. If you care about keeping last page read with an iOS device, the kindle is far far superior. The nook was erratic at best. The kindle touch never fails.

That is all.

I think Nook touchscreen is not multitouch ? and it lacks of web browser, text to speech, and mp3 player ? I try to find Nook's pages for these features but I cannot find them. Or am I wrong ?

There is a reason for both the word "Simple" in the Nook STR's name and the low price.

The NST is the same price as the KT and the KT has a web browser, text to speech, and MP3 player.

You don't need to sell me on Kindle's value proposition over nook, but the KT is not designed and marketed to be a simple basic reader. The STR is.

True.

I just don't get the desire to buy an e-reader that has fewer features then an e-reader that has more features for the same price. Granted, I never use TTS, the web browser, or the MP3 player but I know people who do.

So I guess the point is that it can be a disadvantage to pay the same price for a product with fewer features which is, of course, on topic.

I am going back to eating chocolate covered potato chips. They will help me function.

True, but it can be an advantage (B&N hoped) to buy for the same money, a simpler device without a lot of 'complex doodads'*, and, perhaps more generally reasonable, with a really good form factor, ePub support and tied to B&N's books store.

I need lunch.

*which is why it has 'Simple' in the name and why I think lamenting additional feature and complexity is...odd.

The additional features on the Kindle are tucked away so that they do not get in the way of using the device for its primary function, reading. Personally, if I am paying the same amount of money, I want the biggest bang for my buck. I would prefer to buy a device that has the extras then the "simple" device that is lacking those options. If the "simple" device is less expensive, than no problem. If it is the same price, I would see the lack of features as a disadvantage.

What makes you believe that?

In terms of the eink display, I believe they all use the same exact screen, which comes from same manufacturer. Talking about most recent devices though.

The Sony is a very capable device, same goes for Kindle Touch 3G. Actually, most recent firmware update brought landscape, a feature that I believe (without hacking) is absent from Nook Touch.

I think everything goes back to what type of titles you read and if you really buy those form the online bookstore or not, and if you are willing to crack DRMs, etc.

If you only read bestsellers and novels, any of those will suit your needs without any issue.

Regarding the new glow technology and if you are not in a rush, I would wait and see what Sony or Amazon will deliver before end of fiscal year. It may be better, who knows.

I respectfully disagree.

I personally do not see anything on Amazon's advertisement that is pushing the Kindle as a "geek or complex gadget". As a matter of fact, I've used both and I do not find the Kindle being too complex. It is easy to use, very intuitive.

I didn't say it was.
"Simple" and "Basic" are simply not featured in it's marketing as it is in the "Simple Touch Reader" marketing, and the KT is, in fact, the middle of Amazon's reader line, not the bottom, as the STR is in B&N's line.

Nook including the Simple is a marketing ploy and nothing more.

Thanks for the information tablettweet. That's certainly not superior technology, which the OP claimed as one of the reasons she was considering a Nook STR.
