a colloquialism question
i just read "my dogs are barking today" in a comic strip. it was in a series of colloquialisms using "dog" so i don't have any context to interpret it. anybody can tell me what this means ?

I think it means that your feet (dogs) are hurting. But that would be a humanoid colloquialism (oh, yeah - that's the topic of this here thread, ain't it?). In just plain dogglish, it just means you have some great dogs and they're having a great day. Arf! Arf, Arf!

Some of the ones I like ...
loose cannon (dangerous) squirrell bait (nuts) jail bait (underage girl) the lights are on, but nobody's home (dim witted) if you stick a lump of coal up his/her ass you'll get a diamond nervous as a cat in a room full of rocking chairs |

That damned dog is in my garden again!
Oh, wait, that's a truism, not a colloquialism. |

As I sit here at the keyboard inside where it is cool, away from the heat of the dog days of summer, I reflect at the many varied and colorful expressions expressed in this thread.
No, the thread has not gone to the dogs although some of the strained constructions -- and this post is no exception -- make me wince or laugh. (Mostly in the reverse order.) So I offer a snip for a post I left in another thread (it was an aside there) in commenting on the Land of Oz -- "Where the men are men and the sheep are afraid." Mark responded that they had created a strain of unafraid sheep. |
