Water Witch by Jan Hudson - published by Loveswept 1988

Quote:
Geologist Max Strahan has lost her job and is about to lose her house. When she’s offered a generous sum to locate water on a dry site in the Texas Hill Country, she jumps at the chance. After all, she learned to witch for water at her grandfather’s knee. If there was water on that rocky hill, she’d find it. Piece of cake.

She hadn’t counted on meeting a certain tall, handsome, charmer determined to romance and win her. Sam Garrett knew the minute he saw her that Max was perfect for him, the woman of his dreams, and no power on earth was going to stop him from having her. But could he respect her secret–that she’s a water witch with an oil-sniffing Doberman? And can Max overcome her past to give him a chance? The chemistry between them ignites a cauldron of passion, but is there room for Sam in her own dreams? You’ll find lots of love and laughter and a few colorful characters as these two strong people struggle with finding love and a future together

Firefly by Linda Hilton - published by Loveswept in 1988

Quote:
Julie Hollstrom came to the Arizona Territory leaving behind her scandal, humiliation and devastating loss. Blamed for her family's misfortunes, Julie is resigned to her fate as a lonely spinster. Duty, obligation, and guilt rule her life; there is no room for love or happiness.

Once the respected physician in the dusty frontier mining town of Plato, Del Morgan suffered heart-breaking tragedy too. He drowned his sorrow in drink until all that remained was an empty, bitter shell.

Del and Julie are two lost souls trapped in the darkness of the past. Can an unlooked-for passion light their future?

The Panther and the Pearl by Doreen Owens Malek - published by Leisure 1994

Quote:
The American Beauty: When an innocent excursion to Constantinople took an unexpected twist, Sarah Woolcott found herself a prisoner in the harem of young and virile Kalid Shah. Headstrong and courageous, Sarah was determined to resist the handsome foreigner whose arrogance outraged her— even as his tantalizing touch promised exotic nights of fiery sensuality.

The Turkish Prince: Never had he encountered a woman who inflamed his desire like the blonde Westerner with the independent spirit. Although she spurned his passionate overtures, Kalid vowed to tempt her with his masterful skills until she became a willing companion on their journey of exquisite ecstasy!

But I figure it's offered on really good terms which I'd like to support to encourage the publisher to offer a more general version, the credits roll over so I'm not stuck picking a book every month that I highly unlikely to read, and hopefully they boost the less-romantic historicals section and expand the book club genre selections.

Plus, I think Blossom recommended Shana Galen to me as a not-too-romancey writer who did plotty intrigue/adventure spying historicals in another thread, so I'm willing to try out her thing from next month's selections so there's at least one thing I can read.

* And to be honest, I was hugely unimpressed with half of what I read, because of the genre clichés making the pointless relationship drama very annoying.

Sit down and talk like adults and get over yourselves and your contrived childish willful misunderstandings! I thought romances were supposed to end in people projected to ride off happily ever after into the sunset, not in couples therapy before the inevitable murder/suicide, which is where I would see half of those people winding up, if it weren't for the narrative conventions of Romancelandia, which demand HEA no matter how dysfunctional and ill-suited people are.

Well, thankfully there was a bunch of decent political maneuvering and intrigue centred around actual historical events to read in there as well.
Their discounts on the Georgette Heyer reissues are substantial, though the prices are not as good as the $1.99 last August.

I picked up a number of the Heyers (mainly the straight mysteries and historical sagas) during the sale last year. I left most of the dedicated romance ones alone because the library has many of those in paper. I'm mildly waffling on whether I should have got them, but not particularly regretful. Unlike most of the posters in this thread, I think I'd just read those once because while the romance ones I tried were fun enough, they're ultimately not really my kind of thing.

If another Heyer sale does coincide with Club membership, then even if they're at a higher price, with 40% off and DRM-free MultiFormat, I'd personally consider it a better bargain.

Currently in the middle of reading some of Sourcebooks' previous giveaway freebies for the featured authors for this month and next to see if I want to pick up a book/sale bundle this month, or hoard some credits and potentially scoop two things (darn you, morbid curiosity, for tempting me with cracktastic-sounding blurbs) in May.

Thus far, I can say that Terry Spears' Wolf books are out. So much contrivance, so much misunderstanding, so much willful non-communication, especially from people who are supposed to have enhanced senses which should be able to detect subtle body language/odour shifts and whose lives depend on pack coherency or whatever. Also, the faux-mystery in the 1st book which prevented the destined couple from running off into the sunset together to finally face the complicating pack drama for about 10 chapters really sucked once they started "investigating" it in the most inept manner and had a contrived cop-out whodunnit that also sucked. Or maybe it bit.

For anyone considering the Grace Burrowes $2.99 3-book bundle, be aware that the current pricing is a special introductory month promo, according to the DANL blog, and will expire at the end of April and go up who knows how much (other 3-book bundles look like they're in the $10 range).

Hard Target by Barbara Phinney is free today. It's a romantic espionage thriller. Barbara Phinney is a former Harlequin author who currently writes for their inspirational line Loved Inspired Suspense. It looks to be a new self published story and not an inspirational clean one.

Heyer's romances are much better than her straight historical fiction IMO. And I never really got into her mysteries. I may pass on the May selections unless the Catherine Mann one is better than it sounds?
