More costly to buy, but much cheaper to run.

Of course, some of us get a bad headache from CFLs. And some of us live in countries where anything giving off extra heat is a good thing and a definite bonus.
I wish I could see the GlowLight in person. It really does sound like something I could have use for, especially in the "slightly dimmer light than what I need for reading" conditions. |

A couple of years ago I decided to treat myself to a dedicated reading light.
Did all the research, costings, etc... Call it a "reading light" and double/triple the price seemed the sales tactic - then tried a few out . I ended up binning the idea of a "proper" reading light in favour of an LED one, I thought the light characteristics better for my needs, found an ideal, and stable floor one with bendy neck, for around £50, in IKEA,and it is perfect. And a couple of months ago I happened on another, same type of neck, but clip-on, that fits practically anywhere, in a Lidles supermarket, (I doubt their expansion drive has extended to the States yet, though) at a bargain £6.99. The only drawback is you can't replace bulbs - but at those prices, and the reliability of LED stuff, I don't think it's worrying. |

Try red text on the black background. Once your eyes adjust to it, you will be able to read the screen just fine. Saves your night vision as well. I recently bought a mighty-brite single aaa flex lamp thingy for my STR to be used for night time reading, but I find myself using it much more often. It visibly increases the contrast when reading books in low to medium light levels as well as reading in bed at night with no other lights on. If the Glow could replicate that without losing too much battery life and contrast I will buy one. But the light I bought was only $10 and I use rechargeable batteries for it... Regards, Greg |

I had my reading chair next to a window. Then I moved it to the opposite corner of the room. Not that I can't read there, but turning on the Kindle cover reading light makes for a significant improvement, true, my eyes aren't young and bright anymore, but i was astonsihed at the difference.

I tried reading in bed last night with my k3 lighted cover while my husband tried to sleep. The light really is too bright, and did disturb him, although I had no trouble reading with it. All of a sudden, the Nook Glow is more attractive, although a couple of things about the Nook (sequestered memory, B&N pushing ads for other books on it) disturb me. I'll have to think about it.

One of the things I love about using Sony readers with official lighted covers is the effect they create of silent movie captions projected in relative darkness.
Intertitles in the silent age were lit from the front while being filmed. The results were then translated into flickering light projected, again, from the front onto a lenticular screen of silk embedded with silver or aluminum (hence "silver screen") -- all of which gives the viewer the sense of a ghostly emanation. With LED-lighted covers, something about the darkening borders of that pale projected light and its direction lend a similar effect, awakening nostalgia for a time long before we were born and evoking the elegance of earlier days. Most other light systems I've tried have been too bulky to provide that sort of seamless luminescence (though the Solis with the Kindle 3 comes very close), but I wonder whether the Glow's light creates a similar effect. It's a great effect whether you're reading Baudelaire or George Eliot, and it's conducive to horror stories, with their reliance on the attachment of childhood fears to early memories and objects that seem to exist outside of present time. Those who complain about e-ink screens' dull background compared to paper's might especially enjoy those official lighted covers. If the contrast is similar, they might even come to prefer the internal glowlight. Last edited by Prestidigitweeze; 04-27-2012 at 03:08 PM. |

I use a head lamp to read with and it works great. The light is directed at the screen, it doesn't bother my hubby, and I can easily get up and go to the bathroom without having to turn on any other light. Love the head lamp.

I got to see one at my local B&N today. It was nice. The Glowlight made a difference even in the daytime. I thought the screen was nice. I didn't really notice a lack of contrast. I didn't have my Kindle with me to compare. If you are interested in this but are concerned about reports of the screen contrast, I'd say definitely check it out in person before you decide.

I'm interested, but I have other concerns, more about B&N than about the Touch Glow in specific. They say they don't have ads, but I understand they're constantly pushing other books on you, which I wouldn't like. I do like the NT's general form factor, with the side-press buttons for people who don't like swiping to turn a page (like me). And I don't like sequestered memory, even if I can use a card to expand the memory.
I'll be interested to see if Amazon comes out with something similar. |

I am very enthusiastic about the idea - I have covers with lights on all my ebook readers. But from all images I see, this is just as annoying as reading on an iPad or any other LCD. The whole point of an eink device is that it is easier on the eyes... and that is due, at least partially, to the fact that no light is shining in your face. From all the images I see, I might as well read on my iPad. Which I do not like doing.

If you were not planning on converting your existing library to epub, it might be possible to run the Android Kindle app on your Nook Glow some day, but I think it's unlikely you'd be able to root it on day one. |

I'm a friend of Alf, yes. I read books on both my Sony 350 and my kindle. I often buy books from places like Baen, but have rarely (never?) purchased books from B&N, because I don't like their store interface. I have purchased books from Kobo that I couldn't find anywhere else.
I guess I can just ignore the sequestered memory and pretend it doesn't exist, at least until a root is found for the Glow. |
