I wish you more success than I have had. We should both learn about Calibre but I just wanted this to be simple.

Only if you can charge a company for revoking your license for an ebook and refunding your money. I understand that ebooks are 'licensed' for access and not actual property like physical books.

Its an interesting thought. One has to wonder if there is a clause saying that they can do this willy nilly. Its also a good reason to never use the kobo desktop application.

@ Jackastor Theft, haha! I can imagine the generic reply. The usual niceties about what lovely customer I am for using Kobo followed by ''look in the library which you will find....'' there might be a line about them not selling a book called ''Kobo, You have stolen my books''!
Thanks for the smile.

I'm not sure if this is an okay question to ask or not. I have just been given a Kobo gift voucher and will therefore be buying some books for my KT. So how do I get the book from the Kobo library to Calibre? Or should I get rid of the Kobo desktop before I make my purchases?

I have stayed on the previous version (17 I think?) rather than upgrading to the latest version because of the various comments about the lack of margins. At this stage I have only public domain books on my Kobo.

Thanks for any advice you can give.

You can use both Kobo Desktop AND ADE. When you buy a book from Kobo you will see a BLUE button besides it that says "ADOBE DRM EPUB". Click on that and it will download an ACSM file, that when you open it in ADE will download an ePub that contains DRM.

If you make use of "Apprentice Alf" and his tools, you can then import a DRM free version into calibre and edit metadata etc.

As you have received a refund can't you just repurchase the book? Or have they removed it from the store as well as your Kobo?
Yes, they did refund me but I bought it using a promo code, which means I will have to purchase it at full price now.

Thanks for all the replies and advice
Back when I started with ebooks and ereaders, I tried to figure out Calibre and the downloads but I got nowhere cause I am not sure what to do (I am the trial-and-error kinda person and not a manual reader, which is why LOL).

Could anyone either share step-by-step what to do or lead me to a place where I can learn how to?

Thanks!!!

For the basics of Calibre, why not view the introductory video on the Calibre website:

http://calibre-ebook.com/demo#tour

Plus here's a video from YouTube showing loading books onto the Kobo (Calibre is the first way it shows you):

How to load ebooks on the Kobo Touch e-Reader

I don't remember it being that difficult to set-up and use Calibre. Simply install it, the wizard runs and you tell it where you want it to store your books (Calibre stores any books you load into in it's own directory), and what ereader you have, and then it just works?

You click the Add Books button, tell it where the books are on your computer by browsing to find the files, select them and it'll load them into Calibre (if you have used ADE browse to the My Documents > My Digital Editions folder to locate them). When you connect your Kobo to your computer with Calibre running at the same time you can then just click the Send to Device button to load them onto your Kobo (though I prefer not to use Calibre and just browse for the files on my computer and drag and drop them onto my ereader).

Removing the DRM from the books is another step (and that info isn't allowed to be explained in detail on here, you need to search google for apprentice alf to learn how to do this).

I have to say, this is the most wonderfully titled thread I've had the pleasure of reading. I'm just picturing a huge reader with legs running up grabbing the OP's reader out of their hands and then running off!

I have a different problem with Kobo. I purchased several books during the big coupon week. After exhausting my coupons I happened to find a free book and "purchased" it too. When I went to download it to ADE it gave me an"oops message" . I loaded all the other books onto Calibre and exited the Kobo site and shut down and tried the next day. I got the same "oops" message and called the phone number given in the message. When I called a recorded message informed me that the number is no longer the appropriate number and it gave me another number. I finally got in touch with Kobo. It was a nice woman from the Carribean and she seemed very thorough in repeating and recording the facts as I presented them and assured me that someone would resolve this problem right away. I received an email confirming my request for help and stating the facts in an abbreviated version. That was 4 days ago and no resolution. I still get the "oops" message with the "wrong" phone number. Just thought I should pass this on. I will post the resolution if there is one.

I refuse to use Kobo software and never, ever connect my KT to the internet. I strip DRM from books (usually bought from Amazon), convert with Calibre and to date (YAY!) no problems with book-snatchers!
