Kindle 3 can't read MOBI book???
Hi! I just bought a french book on Amazon.fr (My Kindle is linked to my Amazon.com account) and used Calibre to remove the DRM. I CAN read the book in Calibre, so the file should be ok, DRM-free. I transfer it on my Kindle 3 and there, when I try to read it, I get: "The selected item could not be opened. If you purchased this item from Amazon, delete the item and redownload it from Archived Items available in Home." I've done this before and never had any problem.
I just had to clean my computer, reinstall Windows, Calibre and everything, so maybe it has something to do with this, but I can't see why. Any idea, someone? Thanks in advance *I just tried de-registering my Kindle and registering it on Amazon.fr. Now, I can read the file. This is weird... Last edited by KindleQuebec; 04-20-2012 at 02:28 PM. |

Are you sure you copied the DRM-free version to the Kindle. Of course, if you originally downloaded it for that Kindle, it wouldn't matter. Did you try downloading the book for the Kindle 3?

The OP stated that their Kindle was on their Amazon.com account, not on the French account, so my guess is that they downloaded the file for a different device. Once the DRM was stripped, I can't think of any reason why the Kindle wouldn't be able to open the file, unless the wrong file was transferred. |

If you removed the DRM from an ebook you downloaded to Kindle for PC/Mac version v1.9.0 or greater, and then tried to load it on your Kindle 3 (or K2, K1, or KDX), this is the exact type of error message you will run into if it was a KF8 ebook.
The Kindle app supports KF8... but that doesn't mean your eInk device will know what to do with a DRM-Free KF8 ebook. That may not be what happened in this particular incident, but it's going to start happening a lot. Last edited by DiapDealer; 04-20-2012 at 04:42 PM. |

Although I know you "cleaned" the file, that's a DRM error message. I've had that one pop up on me before and that was definitely the issue.

Does Calibre still identify it as a mobi file? If you buy a book that is KF8, and you buy it for a K2, does it send a different file type? Or is there something in the DRM that allows it to open on a K2? |

I think I know what the problem is.
The eBook in question is a KF8 format eBook and yes the DRM can be stripped and the eBook can then be viewed via Calibre. But it cannot be viewed via a Kindle 3 unless it's first converted to a Mobipocket file. I think Calibre could do the conversion. |

I think the book is associated with your .fr account and still has DRM, hence it can now be read with the Kindle registered to the .fr account. but not when the Kindle is registered to your .com account
You say you reinstalled Calibre, but did you reinstall the tools needed to strip DRM? They aren't part of the standard program, they need to be installed separately. |

If you download it to one of the apps, probably not. It will be an AZW file like anything else. But if you download it from your Amazon library there's a good chance it will have an AZW3 extension. I'm not sure about files downloaded directly to devices that support KF8... I don't have one.

Absolutely. If it's already been disinfected, a mobi-to-mobi conversion (with a recent version of calibre) will make the book readable on the K3. But just like any ePub to mobi conversion... there's no guarantee that the conversion will be completely loss-less.

And if it really is KF8, it would come out as a Mobi for the K3. |

Which is exactly what I was referring to. For all intents and purposes, the conversion of a KF8(MOBI) to the MOBI format by calibre is the same as converting an ePub to MOBI with calibre.
