I have just last night begun (well, just the intro) Steve Jordan's Onis...Oniuss....Onn... (Steve, you need to write the childrens version, with appropriately aimed title, so I can spell it proper-like [goes and checks Mobipocket Reader...]) ...The Onuissance Cells.

Cheers,
Marc

I've begun several books in the past couple of days that I had to quit reading because they were so awful...

Trashed: Rainbow's End. The pace never picked up. Life's too short to waste reading this. It is about these precocious kids who want a real life, from what I could tell about the book from the short bit I read.

Trashed: Orphans of Chaos. One of those free Tor books. It's almost the same as Rainbow's End, at least the part I read.

Trashed: Reiffen's Choice. Another Tor book. What's with all the precocious kids? And this one is scrubbing a talking bear. NOTE TO AUTHORS: Leave the precocious kids to television, please.

Reading: Spin. Another Tor book. Seems OK, so far. It has kids, but not annoying know-it-all types, and I suspect it is going to quickly move to their adulthood, so I'll keep reading.

It's always nice to start a new book, but today I started one while sitting in the spa at 36C, nice tall glass of coolness in one hand, new book in the other, looking occasionally out off the balcony to the western sunset. That was pleasant.

Incidentally, the book was Robert Dessaix's Night Letters and, though it's too early to offer a firm opinion, it has been opened by Mister Dessaix so beautifully and interestingly that I am quite hopeful.

Cheers,
Marc

Just finished reading the first 19 volumes of the manga series Gantz (fan translation). It was recommended to me because 3d tools are used during its creation (I've been working on developing a manga using 3d tools). Although it had quite a lot of gore and some rather explicit sexual content, both of which I felt detracted from the story, I kept reading because it also had surprising depth of character development and an interesting premise. Dark Horse Comics has picked up the English translation and the first volume is supposedly available starting next week (paper only, of course).

now stop it. are you trying to drive us all to despair ??

i've just started City by Alessandro Baricco (i always want to double all the consonants in his name, but it's just the c). i haven't read any of his books in a long time (several years), but as i read the first page i wondered to myself, "why do i even bother reading anything else ??? i should just read Baricco every day, and when i get to the end of the last book, just start back at the beginning again."

oh, except for "Océan Mer" (Ocean Sea ? not sure of the english title). that one is a devastating read. i read it once, years ago, and i'm still not quite over it. i think that's enough. it's worth it though, if you can take it.

Spin is turning out to be really good.
I'm 1/3 way thru, about page 500 of 1500 pages. It is hard to put down to eat or work or sleep. So far, I highly recommend it to anyone who is tired of fantasy. It is hard scifi, with characters that make me want to care about them, facing a crisis of unimaginable scope in very human ways. I'm anxious to find out what the other 2/3 of the book brings!

"After Dark" written by Haruki Murakami. Because I loved his other books, especially "A Wild Sheep Chase", "Dance Dance Dance", "Norwegian Wood" and "Kafka on the shore". Very strange & surreal.

OK -- have finished reading:
64. A Fountain Filled with Blood
65. The Tentmaker by Michelle Blake, mass-market paperback.
66. Whisper of Evil by Kay Hooper, mass-market paperback.

Still working on Titan and Love Over Scotland. Actively reading On the Slam by Honor Hartman (mass-market paperback) and The Prisoner of Zenda by Anthony Hope -- the first of two novels that Flogiston uploaded here as Ruritania Duology.

What do you think of Titan? I stopped reading the Grand Tour after Venus, which was a surprising disappointment since I have always loved Ben Bova's work so much.
