I wish someone would post that video online that I saw on The Daily Show recently. A woman says "Daddy's home," and a dog goes crazy greeting a returning soldier. Well, that's is all over the web, but then Jon Stewart showed the next video. A woman says "Daddy's home," and the family cat looks completely indifferent and walks away.

The British countryside is pretty damn beautiful actually - I was driving across a rural area the other day, it is beautiful.
I'm reminded of the opening scene in Mary Poppins (the 1964 Disney film), where there is a rooftop view of London, with black coal smoke coming from every chimney.

Granted, I haven’t been to the UK in many years, and England even longer. But I spent quite a bit of time in Scotland in the sixties, and every home I visited had a fireplace with a bag of coal sitting on the hearth. I’m sure things are quite different today, but my recollection of the UK is shades of gray. Which by the way, is not all bad.

Ah, as long as you're basing your comments on a Disney film and personal recollections 50 years old that's OK then

Cats make a special point of seeking out the one person in a room who doesn't like cats and then rubbing round his/her legs and trying to jump up on the person's lap. To paraphrase Lewis Carroll, they only do it to annoy because they know it teases!

They sure seek me out, so I guess there's a bit of collaborating evidence in support of that hypothesis.

Mr M sits next to anyone that comes over. Cat lovers and cat not-so-lovers. Although he tries harder with the not-so-lovers because they don't call him and chase him around for pats.

Last night when cycling home from my friends' place I was stopped by the police who were checking bicycles. Most Dutch cyclists haven't got (working) lights on their bike and every once in while the police checks cyclists if their bikes are good (lights, reflector things, etc).

And they always have to pick me. I don't know why, my lights are working, my bike isn't rattling and all the parts are still on it. After a thorough check I did get compliments that my bike was one of the best maintained they have seen in a long time. But whilst checking my bike a great number of cyclists they could have ticketed because they either didn't have lights, were missing important parts (eg. back fender which has to partially white or reflectors) or were in a state of bike-decomposition were let through.

I've had this happen a lot of times already and am now convinced they don't want to write tickets to cyclists and don't want to have a safer traffic situation.

I'm also annoyed with other cyclists for not having their bikes in order, but the law is encouraging it; if a cyclist gets hit by a car it is automatically assumed that the driver of the car is at fault. Even if it's at night and the cyclist didn't have any lights, was wearing dark clothes and ran through a red light.

Whenever someone comes over, all our kitties head for the hills.
Well not actual hills, but their favorite hidey holes.

Maple heads for the hills around here. She still doesn't even give our two-year old the time of day. She heads for the hills as soon as she hears him wake up.

I have a feeling that the first week after the baby comes home from the hospital that the house is going to be filled with the sound of crying baby followed by barking dogs who are confused by the crying baby followed by the sound of dogs fleeing for the basement to get away from the crying baby.

It'll probably be 6-7 months at least, before the crying baby is mobile, and thus *really* needs to be escaped from!
