No. There are only three things that you can do with a Kindle:

1. Press the power switch briefly. This puts it to sleep, with a screen saver.

2. Hold the power switch in for about 7 seconds. This puts it to sleep, but with a blank screen. It will still wake instantly when you press the power switch.
I read that the indexing was running in 1 but not in 2. Is that not true? So that 1 is not guaranteed to be sleep.

But the manual call 2 off. They do not call it sleep.

They may call it that, but it plainly is a sleep mode. Press the power button - does it come on instantly, or do you get the "boy under a tree" boot sequence?

I don't own a Kindle, so this is an uneducated guess, but it sounds to me as though what they are doing is very similar to hibernating a laptop i.e. copying the entire contents of memory to a swapfile on disk and then powering down. The start up is just copying the swapfile back to memory, so no boot operations and it's much faster.

You don't get a boot sequence when you power up a hibernated laptop but once hibernated it is most definitely off. I'm sure I've removed/swapped batteries on hibernated laptops with no ill effect. If Amazon call this option "Off" then that's what it might be.

It is as off as the Kindle gets and most people refer to it as off. Harry is very precise in all of his language but I think that any Flight Attendent would tell you that what they want is the screen blank = off. So hold the power button for a few extra seconds. It may not make a difference for the device but it makes the Flight Attendants happy if they are watching you.

So whatever happened to our campaign of civil disobedience?

How do you think I know that they want the screensaver gone? (winks)

And I don't see it as civil disobedience.

Civil disobedience is too grand a word for such a small matter. But it is a stupid law from another age that has been made obsolete by technological progress. And we want to make it go away.

If they really are hibernating it, then it's off. As off as it gets, you could pull the battery with no change.

So what if you have the "Special Offers" version?

If I am not mistaken the screensaver stays on at this one.

Best regards,

You are mistaken; it behave exactly the same as the "normal" Kindle. Hold in the power switch for about 7s and the screen goes blank. The the Kindle is just asleep; it's not turned off. I have a Kindle Touch with special offers.

The report is pretty clear on the fact that the pilot was on the phone at the time of the crash rather than flying the plane:
Quote:
The way in which the pilot set up and conducted the instrument approach was conducive to a high workload at best, and potential overload and distraction if any complicating factor arose.
The significant events were:
• the high speed descent leading into the unstabilised approach
• the late reversion from autopilot to hand-flying, with little time to settle in before intercepting the ILS approach
• not leaving the autopilot engaged and not selecting it for a coupled approach, and
• his cellphone call, initiated just before commencing the approach.
I'm not sure how you managed to misinterpret the fact that he made the call as he was landing.
