Amazon snags Bond

Time to flog Amazon with a different stick:

Quote:
SEATTLE, Apr 17, 2012 (BUSINESS WIRE) --Amazon.com, Inc. and Ian Fleming Publications Ltd today announced that Amazon Publishing has acquired a ten-year license for North American rights to the entire list of James Bond books by Ian Fleming in print and ebook. Along with the iconic series, Fleming's two works of non-fiction, consisting of a collection of travel writings called Thrilling Cities (1963) and an expose of the illegal precious stones trade entitled The Diamond Smugglers (1957), are also included in the agreement. Jonny Geller, Managing Director at Curtis Brown, negotiated the agreement. All of the titles will be reissued by Amazon Publishing's Thomas & Mercer imprint beginning in summer 2012.
The next Bond movie is due next summer, right?

Bond normally comes out around Thanksgiving in the US. That is the end of November for folks not in the US. They are still filming the movie right now. I just saw an article that a stuntman was hurt during a chase scene.

Hopefully they price the Bond books better then they have been because they are way too high.

Probably a dumb question but does that mean only Amazon can sell them? That would leave all those with ePub readers out in the cold? If so, that adds even more dastardlyness to the evils of drm and format wars.

I remember being shocked to learn ca. 1998 that all of the Bond 007 books were out of print in the US.

There's ways to convert Kindle files to ePubs. If you look hard enough, I'm sure you can find them.

Thanks - I do know how, but was thinking of many who wouldn't. At least now, kobo and kindle each carry *most* of the same books, but it will be worse for consumers, if the sellers start dividing up the market.

Ebooks will probably be exclusive.

B&N and some other retailers are refusing to carry books published by Amazon. They might change their minds for the Bond stuff, but maybe not.

Not a dumb question.
So far, for other Amazon Publishing titles, the competitors have refused to carry the print books.
The eBooks Amazon Publishing has signed up have tended to be Kindle exclusive but with all the anti-Amazon hatred out there they might be refused, even if they weren't Kindle-exclusive.

It'll be interesting to see how Amazon plays it.

Hope they have a big sale like they did with the 87th Precinct books.

Well, they *were* available (out of print) so whoever last had the rights chose not to renew. It goes without saying that the other publishers didn't value them as much as Amazon.
And, let's face it; these are old, dated titles. Not likely to show up on the NYT "bestsellers" list are they? They really don't fit with the BPH business model...

They were being sold across the bookstores but the price was silly. I think it was over $10 a book. I love me good James Bond but for books that had been out that long the price was far to high.

That would be Penguin.

So basically whats happening is those of us that do not pay for eBooks via Amazon are left out for the James Bond eBooks. Ten years is a bit too long to wait for them to maybe be available.

I hate to say this, but I will... this eBook exclusivity is a bad thing. It hinders a large group of people from being able to read what they want as they want.

This is a series of eBooks I would have bought (prices being reasonable) that I won't be buying.
