I wasn't expecting to win. OK, what branch of the US armed forces had only 50 members at the start of WWII.

I don't know the answer, but I do know that the U.S. Air Force was part of the Army and Navy during WWII. So, I'll guess Coast Guard. I can't imagine that the Army, Navy, or Marines only had 50 at the start of WWII.
