Now that sounds like an ADE issue. How does your T1 appear to the OS,

This need not be the case for the device to be recognized, but it does
make things easier.

available through the OS before an application like ADE can access the device.

Once you get your PC's OS able to recognize the device properly, (usually a matter of
a USB or device driver) ADE should be able to deal with your device. You should also
be able to use the OS file handling features to move files to and from the device. If the
device has Adobe Reader Mobile 9.1.1 or later as its reading software you would then
be able to open and unlock the infected B&N epub files. ADE would not be needed or a
part of the process. [If your device has an internet function, you would want a later
version of Adobe Reader Mobile, as the v9.1.1 had a security issue. But for most people
you will have little choice in the matter.]

The OS sees PRS-T1, Sony Reader app sees it, but ADE does not. That is the problem.

I have no idea what version(s) of RMSDK Sony is using, but the point is it does not enable unlocking of B&N files (this is something the vendor needs to implement, and either Sony has never bothered to update RMSDK, or if they have, Sony has not implemented this feature). In theory ADE might be able to supply an unlock token so that RMSDK on the device would agree to open the book. But at this point it still seems not possible.

OK, when the OS sees the PRS-T1 dose it see it as a drive? Does it give it
a drive letter? Does the OS file explorer/manager show a hidden folder
".adobe-digital-editions" with the file "device.xml" ?

The OS recognizes the T1 as well (as an external/removable drive). It does give it (multiple) letters. It's only ADE that doesn't recognize the T1.

Then in the root of one of those drives there needs to be that hidden folder with the
"device.xml" file, in order for ADE to recognize your device as one it can "authorize".

The device.xml file includes data ADE needs to complete the authorization process
including a reference to the Adobe Reader Mobile version.

If Sony isn't cooperating with Adobe and providing that file with the proper data,
then ADE will not work with the device.

Great, just great. So the only way to d/l library books with this thing is via the device itself. *sigh*

Or use the Sony software. It will open .acsm files and download books the same way ADE does.

As I remember it, you can download the actual .epub to your PC's ADE library folder
when you open the .acsm file. Then that .epub file can be disinfected. The Sony
should allow the sideloading of uninfected ebooks.

Neither the READER nor the SETTING drive show a hidden folder called ".adobe-digital-editions" in their root directory.

So unless Sony and Adobe agree on the content of the device.xml file, and Sony adds it during an update someday, we can't use ADE to put books on a T1.

Edit- Sideloading does indeed work, else Sony would have one less customer.

I still haven't gotten Reader of Mac to even start up on my MacBook w/ 10.6.6... Some sort of permissions problem, as far as I can tell.

Yes, sideloading works for everything except for books with B&N DRM. For these, you should not need ADE at all unless you want to use ADE to read with (accessibility etc.). I really think Sony miscalculates by not implementing handling of B&N. It's one of my few complaints about the device.

FWIW, I had Reader running on 10.6.6 and it still runs after upgrade to 10.7.x.

It sounds like Sony is deliberately disabling the B&N support and any functionality with
any software but their own, something like Kindle.

This seems odd to me but then I own an Ectaco jetBook Lite which supports ADE (epub
and pdf), B&N (epub) and Secure eReader (pdb), DRM scams. Not that I put any
infected files on my JBL, anymore.

I just hope that we can continue to find ways to remain free un-captured consumers.

Right, both have to coordinate with the Adobe server data.

I was referencing the file structure that your PC's OS explorer sees when
the device is connected to your PC. You may need to enable the ability to
see "hidden" and "System" files in your PC's explorer. The devices own file
management will probably not let you see those folders or files.

THis makes no sense...why would it use the .ePub format but not ADE functionality. *bangs head* I don't want to use the Reader software. It's...annoying to say the least.

Here's hoping that Kobo comes out with a new reader with collections sooner rather than later.

I imagine that Sony; like Apple, Amazon, and B&N want all good little customers to
only use their software with their devices (it's not as if the devices are really yours,
after all, just because you purchased them). They all seem to find little ways to try
and force your compliance, for your own good of course.

I suppose that it doesn't help that Adobe is equally guilty of its own evil empirical
tactics.

Just for the record, I am very much a free market capitalist. All the more reason that I
would decry corporate abuses.

Adobe Digital Editions 1.8 Preview 4 (1.8.3) now available

Just noticed Adobe released version 4 of ADE 1.8 Preview.

http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/digitaleditions1-8/

FWIW, the changelog includes: Vendor Authorization, Printing, and Full Screen view.

I'm still hoping ADE will be able to transfer B&N epubs to a Sony T1 Reader. Is the fourth version the charm???
