So how does one turn off an eInk Kindle?

I've had it Wi-Fi off, Kindle put to sleep (and away) for take-off and landing. And I gather that "screensaver off" is still sleep, just sleep without the screensaver showing. And I can't even take out the battery, because I'm not supposed to get to it.

Is "screensaver off" sleep enough or should I just go into a corner and be ashamed for being a horrid criminal now?

You can't turn it off; all you can do is put it to sleep.

You hold the power switch until the screen saver goes away. Technically, a Kindle in sleep mode uses as much energy as a Kindle turned off. The E-book reader only uses energy when it is changing pages. Which is why I don't worry about turning it off. I have had Flight Attendents who were a bit more concerned in making sure that passenger X turns it all the way off and having a discussion about sleep being the same as off just strikes me as silly.

That's true. I have an iPod touch 4 running iOS 5.1 and I enabled both WiFi and Bluetooth. Then I put it in airplane mode and both were turned off. I then went back in and turned both of them back on again while still in airplane mode.

Same difference, you just chose a way to say it to give you an out. In fact doing so is the very definition of "passive aggressive" as you mentioned and I find that ironic. Since telling a FA to take a leap will likely result in them abusing their questionable powers to have me arrested it is simply common sense to not do so...but that doesn't mean I have to obey the silly rules and I will continue not to. At this point the best I can do and not cause myself a problem is to quietly do what I know is safe and not make a scene. Again...calling that cowardly is a deliberate bait and you know you did it on purpose.

1) turn off wifi/3G (if on)
2) turn off e-reader completely.
3) Open up DTB/magazine brought to read during takeoff/landing (short story anthologies are good for this, as they can be read and finished quickly)
4) Switch back to e-reader once takeoff/landing is over.

I make sure that wifi & bluetooth is off (they usually are, saves the battery) and continue reading. I fly quite seldom, and can't remember any problems. IIRC once I had to explain that it is not a phone but PDA and is not emitting any waves.

You say in your profile that you have a Kindle. How do you "turn it off completely"? I don't know of any way to do that.

I will be flying for the first time later this year with an ereader. I think I'll just turn it off - it's not hard to turn it back on afterwards.

What do you mean by that? I assume completely mean to turn it off as much as possible using the buttons. Do you mean to say that it is not completely since the on/off button is not mechanical?

What Harry means is not just put the Kindle in sleep mode (that is what the off button does) but to completely power it off. From sleep mode the device wakes up immediately. From "Off" mode it takes a minute or so, as it does after a firmware upgrade or if you let the device's battery run dead and it comes back on after charging.

According to the rules, sleep mode is not good enough.

Yes, but from what I read you turn it off by holding the off button a longer time. Is that not true? (I do not have my Kindle here so I cannot test it.)

Well, quite, DO think of the children - totally irresponsible advice, Diap - the little dears'll cut their little feeties on the shards .......

No. There are only three things that you can do with a Kindle:

1. Press the power switch briefly. This puts it to sleep, with a screen saver.

2. Hold the power switch in for about 7 seconds. This puts it to sleep, but with a blank screen. It will still wake instantly when you press the power switch.

3. Hold the power switch in for about 20s. This will reboot the Kindle.

There is no way to power down a Kindle. You can put it to sleep, or you can reboot it. You can't shut it down.
