Which kindle for bible reading?
Hi all, I'm new to mobileread and this is my first posting.
![]() I'm thinking of getting an ebook reader to read the Bible. I think it's an ideal device as Bibles can be quite heavy to lug around or read on the bed for that matter! I've done some research on the different models and now I'm feeling torn between them. I've tried a friend's Kindle 3 and I like the comparatively retro looks and I'm fine with the navigation, which didn't take me too long to figure out. I'm also thinking of the Kindle Touch though it has a cheaper look (it's probably just me) and doesn't seem to support landscape mode. I've read reviews of people preferring the tactile buttons on the Kindle 3 when it comes to paging up or down. Another advantage of the Kindle 3 which I read about is that it is taller, hence you have more space to hold the book and turn the pages, without having to change your hand positions. So what do you all think? Are there any significant improvements of the Touch over the keyboard version? P.s: Are the rubberised backs made of the same material, as I have an aversion for mildly tacky rubber materials. TIA. |

Just a note to say that, with the most recent firmware update, the Touch now does support landscape orientation. I must very strongly disagree with your view that the KT is "cheaper" than the K3. It's actually significantly better built; the K3 feels like cheap plastic; the KT is a much higher quality product - to my mind at least, and I have both.

I use Osnova Direct Jump Bibles for my Kindle Keyboard and Tecarta Bibles for my Kindle Fire.

Thanks for the comments.
HarryT, I just read about the update which allows landscape view. I haven't handled the new Kindles yet but just discovered two local shops that are selling Kindles, so I may just go and try them out if they have demonstration units. Sirmaru, I've read about the Osnova and seen one of the youtube videos, and it seems promising! Can the Tecarta be used on the keyboard version too? By the way, do you guys and gals actually used the light for reading? It doesn't seem very ideal to me, coming from an angle. And I'm not a fan of LED, the color of the light seems odd to me. |

I have a KJV kindle Bible and it reads very well on the K3. I take it with me when I go to church on Sunday mornings. It does take a moment or two to go to a particular book and chapter and might be a little faster on the touch (I don't have a Kindle touch) but I have yet to have serious problems with reading the Bible on the K3 (aside from occasional freezing of the reader which is probably a common problem to all readers).

I had used Osnova Direct Jump on my Keyboard. Just type a book abbreviation, chapter and verse and you are there. Unfortunately, it requires use of the Kindle keyboard indexing function which has not been ported to the Kindle Fire. Darkened light in some Church locations makes the Fire preferable to the keyboard since it has its own LCD backlight. However, an anti-glare screen overlay is required to prevent high fluorescent glare in Church. Last edited by sirmaru; 04-13-2012 at 09:58 AM. |

A lighted cover solves that problem for the eInk devices. They work extremely well; I have one for my K3.

I have the K2, K3, DX and Touch, and the Touch is my favorite of them all. It has a nice solid feel when holding it, and navigating around is much quicker with the touch interface.

Amazon will soon be introducing an eInk reader with Glow Light. That should supercede the Kindle Fire, Touch and Keyboard. Here is the Nook version just introduced:

Kindle Fire versus Kindle Glow Light
Quote:
For me a Kindle Glow Light would replace both of those other devices. Frankly, the Kindle Fire is just a little too heavy for real comfort. A Kindle Glow Light would be just right for all iighting conditions. I'd probably still keep my Kindle Fire and Kindle Keyboard since both still work fine. I had tried lighted covers for the Kindle Keyboard but they shorted the eReader and I discarded them. Frankly, I expect to buy a new Kindle device every year if available. I buy mainly to enjoy new technology. Last edited by sirmaru; 04-14-2012 at 09:19 AM. |

Thanks for sharing all your insights.
I'm hoping that Amazon comes up with an eink keyboard ereader, though unlikely. I tried the touch and the G4 at the local ship but wasn't very impressed. Still like the keyboard version better for the tactile feedback when turning pages and typing. I do have a NookColor that I've converted into a tablet, but it's heavier than an ereader. |

Im not an expert in reading the bible but i could imagine that it could be usefull to make annotations and bookmarks? For that reason i would clearly preferr a Kindle keyboard.

Yes, making annotations and bookmarks would be helpful. I'm very much a tactile person so I've more or less made up my mind to get the keyboard version if I do eventually get a Kindle. The more I research about the different e-readers, the more I'm convinced that I want the Kindle, if only because more hacks are available!
![]() I'm still ambivalent about the need for a lighted cover, glow light technology or a third party clip-on light. I hardly ever read with the lights off, and I'm not a fan of LED lights. Exactly how readable/unreadable is the Kindle when it comes to indoor reading? My room lights are not very supermarket bright nor dim, somewhere in between I think. |
