Don't blame Kobo. The prices are usually set by the publisher.

Well, that certainly would have been nice if I knew I wanted to read the series. I can't say I pay that much attention to the store on a day-to-day basis. I tend to look at it when I'm wanting something new to read (or know that I will soon want something new).

The larger version is going to be cheaper per some amount. Unless there is a sale on the smaller size and then it could be cheaper per amount.

10-15 years ago that would have always been true. Today, stores take advantage of that expectation and sometimes have a higher price/unit in the larger sizes. You have to check every time. I've had a hard time getting my wife to understand this.

Kiwipappa - I've been keeping track of this. The result is that the government will 'fine' the guilty parties and make a killing on the financial penalty they will have to pay. What do the people who bought the overpriced ebooks get - nothing. Just like where I live with gas prices. A major supplier just plead guilty to price fixing in my city. The government fined them $700,000. To the poor working sap who bought the overpriced gas - $0.00.

Book 1: $5
Book 2: $9
Book 3: $9
Price for set bought individually: $23

Price for set bought as a single collected edition: $27.

That's great. Very sensible. Add that to the fact that the first three hits on a search for "Suzanne Collins Hunger Games" are not books by Suzanne Collins.

Meanwhile, over at Amazon Kindle store:
Book 1: $5
Book 2: $7.40
Book 3: $5.80

Price for set bought individually: $18.20

Price for set bought as a single collected edition: $19

Still not sensible, in terms of the discrepancy between the indiviudual prices and the price of the collection, but a lot closer.

So why would I spend $23 or $27 at Kobo when I can have the same thing for just over $18 at Amazon?

I'd rather have the Kobo editions for my Kobo reader, but the Amazon version is not a challenge to read on the Kobo either. I do it all the time.

If I decide to buy the books, it's no contest. For a difference of a dollar or two, I'd go ahead with the Kobo versions. For $5 difference I'll go to Amazon.
you could try the welcome75ca code ...

With this, the trilogy edition comes out as $7.62 (including PST and GST).

PeterT FTW!

Thanks very much! Even though I didn't have my mind made up, at $7.08 for the trilogy I couldn't resist.

I have a KT and a Kindle 3 which my wife uses most of the time - when one of us wants a book I see who has it cheaper, Amazon or Kobo and buy it accordingly then install it on either ereader, it doesn't matter where it came from originally. Sadly most of the time the cheaper source is Amazon (by some significant margin).

So do they simply keep fining them every few years or do they have to stop as well? Did the price of your petrol go down? I'm fairly sure in New Zealand they would be fined AND would have to change their practices. Happened recently with most of the banks and credit card charges. Now our credit card statements show all the fees broken down in detail.

In the news, there are reports about lawsuits against Apple for colluding with publishers to keep prices artificially high and to prevent other sellers from offering the book for less.

I recently purchased the ebook Stolen Continents by Ronald Wright from Kobo books. $18! Yikes. But I really wanted it. Later I checked the price of the paper version on the Chapters/Indigo website. Surprise! Regular price is $18 (the same) and it was on sale for $13.68.

The publisher is Penguin, one of the ones mentioned in the lawsuit.
