That voice to text function is amazing but sadly it still requires a data connection. Turn off wifi and 3G and that option disappears from your keyboard. I expect we'll have the horsepower for local processing in a few years though, probably sooner than we get reasonable data prices in the USA.

I think it relies on a huge database. Not practical on a mobile device.

I know someone with arthritis. She has the iPad 2. Is this function worth the upgrade? Nice thing about the iPad is you can always resell for a good price or find someone who gladly takes it.

That scene isn't nearly as bad as Jeff Goldblum uploading a virus to the alien ship in Independence Day. Good thing those aliens were running an open source OS. A Linux variant, no doubt.

Only you can determine whether this function is worth the money, but I can tell you that it seems to work pretty well. I'm doing this post with it.

Naah, the quote parts were done by hand.

It's definitely going to take some time to figure out how best to use the dictation feature.

I agree that it very much sounded like see Spot run.

Then again it is a lot faster than typing. I don't think I choose to use voice dictation if I was sitting at my PC with my keyboard. But when I'm on my iPad, laying on my couch, reading this blog, I could participate much easier by talking than by typing on the iPad.

I prefer typing over speaking to a computer any day. Once one learns to type it is actually as fast or faster than speaking. I have to speak at work all day ...the last thing I want to do it speak to a computer...
