I'm always telling her to slow down! She's a workaholic, and doesn't stop moving for a second. Even when she's sitting down on the floor 'relaxing' in the Lotus position, she's more than likely to have all her weight on her hands with her body an inch off the ground swinging gently back and forth from her shoulders.

wow! She's amazing. I will look up more of her stuff!

I have a herniated L4 and L5 - not too bad, but have improved heaps with a class called body balance by Les Mills. Yoga based. The swinging you describe is in some of the classes, and I have yet to even hold it for a second let alone the swinging. Anyway I have recently learned there is a lot that can be done just by strengthening your body and in particular your core. Jolie must have a very strong core.

I guess so ...

Core strengthening is one of her pet projects. Her idea is that if you move your body correctly in the first place, the strengthening will happen of its own accord. So she is very into proper postural positioning when reaching up, bending over, standing still, etc.

She's also a 3rd dan Black Belt in Shaked Bayaar Karate, a member of the International Martial Arts Hall of Fame, and loves funny hats. She is one of the most down to earth people I know. She'd rather sit on the floor than in a chair, stay in rural guest houses in S.E. Asia than big hotels, and is sweet as candy! Her husband Paul is 6'10" and is truly the Gentle Giant! We have had some wonderful adventures together in Thailand!

My trainer touts core strength. It is at the root of maintaining good posture, balance, and over all physical health. He swears that the very limited back pain I have had in my pregnancy is due to the fact that for the past three years he has targetted my core with increasingly difficult exercises.

Yoga and pilates target the core as well. I have had friends with back problems improve a ton when they started pilates.

Before I met her, having only read her CV, I assumed that she was in her 70's and the photo was old. Otherwise, how could she have achieved so much, done so much, and learned so much, right? I pictured this elderly woman, gray hair done up in a bun, a little overweight, with 'old lady shoes,' brown or black clothing, and a walking cane...

Bright yellow T-shirt, old faded jeans, Ho-Chi-Min sandals, flaming red hair tied back in a ponytail, looking about 30... Really really good posture...
She makes the Energizer Bunny look like he's on tranqs!

Thanks Pooh. I'd heard of Pilates, but hadn't appreciated its application to bad backs.

Anything that strenghtens the core will help a bad back. The core provides stability for the entire body. It is vital.

Check with your Doctor before starting something though and make sure that your instructor knows that you have back issues. Try and come to a class just before it ends so you can talk to the nstructor after the class. Ask about how they modify exercises and the like. If the instructor seems taken back or does not encourage modification, look for a different class.

Yeah. You had to point that out didn't you?
A Good Looking army of experts.
I kind of feel now as if you would play a Pavlovian organ on me

Btw. I feel taken back to a thread, where I pointed out that there are things happening or existing in RL which every editor on earth would handwave away as too improbable or far-fetched in fiction:
Now please reconsider her multiple achievements and skills ; appearance and the tiny fact she's named Jolie (french for 'lovely', 'cute', 'sweet'...) AND show me one fiction editor who would not write "MARY-SUE" in blinking letters on the margin. I'd bet on that. Isn't that somehow incredibly funny?
