what?! But isn't that like looking directly into a flashlight and making it harder for you to sleep after bedtime reading?

No. With a lighted cover (at least with the Amazon lighted cover) the light is shielded; it shines onto the screen, not into your eyes.

If I understand correctly, an LED has been built in the ereader frame and angled so that it will evenly shine ACROSS the surface and NOT towards your face.

not much different than dimmed backlit LCDs. Don't forget optical phenomena only happens precisely because light bounces around and eventually reaches your eyes.

I want a better screen, not a more gimmicky one. I think this will probably just add weight, bulk, and encourage me to read without adequate lighting, which is worse for me eyes.
And isn't the advantage of eink not having light emanating from the screen. Not the same thing as backlit LCD, but seems closer to it than to outside light source. |

I assume you can turn the light on and off, right?
Light waves hitting the eye will be indirect reflections from the e-ink screen and not direct light like LCD or LED? |

If the next eInk Kindle has a 1024x768 plastic screen with front lighting, I think I would be tempted.
i.e. I'm hoping all the rumoured new tech makes it into one product! |

This front light is no worse then the light cover for the Kindle as both use the Kindle's battery to power the light. |

A 1024x768 screen would be much nicer then a front light (IMHO).

Does anyone know why this technology is so late in coming? This doesn't sound very different from the the backlight used in modern LCDs or the frontlight used in ancient LCDs.

I'm sure we all remember the fiasco of the Sony PRS-700 with its built-in light. The light worked fine; the problem was that the diffuser used to distribute the light made the screen look as if you were reading it through thick fog. I'm sure that no manufacturer wants to repeat that disaster.
