I do not report people who break rules. I might tell them not to, but that's it.

I am totally convinced that an ereader or similar electronic gadget is no threat at all to flight safety. Irritated, unfocused staff might be though. And if they have to have individual discussions with all of you that feel entitled to do what you want that might be the result. (Their job is stressful enough as it is!) Therefore it is possible your actions do have effects on your fellow passengers and I think that is inconsiderate.

I have no problem with someone reporting people who are breaking the rules. I think it is silly to bully people into not telling on folks who break the rules. I would hope that Harry would ask me to turn off my device before pushing the button but that is his call to make.

I want my soon to be born son to tell me if anyone is breaking the rules/law if they are hurting him in any way or doing something that is dangerous (drugs, drinking and driving). While these are more serious then using an e-reader, it is better for people to feel comfortable telling the authorities when the rules are being broken then not. That is not being an ass, that is part of being a good citizen.

I would hope that there is a sense of balance, that is breaking the rules but taking the extra cookie is not that big of a deal. I respect that people have different ideas about the possible consequences of mass use of electronics on a plane.

It is not a big deal. If asked, I would turn it off and I would not feel like my seat mate was being a tattle tale.

That is why I am considerate enough to wait until the stewardesses have taken their seats before I start using my reader again. What they don't know won't be stressful for them. Everybody wins!

Every flight I take the announcement is to turn off all electronics including phones, music players, laptops, e-readers, headsets, and video game players. They then mention that there is a list of approved devices in the flight information found in the seat pocket for you to check.

I fly Jet Blue and United a fair amount and that is what I hear.

It would make sense to me to use the rest room before boarding the plane, so this shouldn't be a problem at all.

You speed, which actually can kill people, but you are against people using their ereaders during take-off and landing, which caused no problems so far, and according to anyone who has a basic concept of how RF signals interact with electronics will never cause problems.

The issue is that if you consider it acceptable for people to ignore this law because they think that they know better than the law, you're opening the door to those people who have devices which really MAY be harmful to also ignore the law. Are you willing to stake your life on the fact that every device that someone brings on board an aircraft is harmless? You may be. I'm not.

Honestly, you can kill someone with your car while driving the speed limit. If you hit a pedestrian because your tire blows out at 35 MPH, the pedestrian is likely dead. Driving in inherently risky. Speeding makes it more risky, which is why it is a crme, but not speeding does not mean that you might not one day have an accident that harms you or someone else, or kills someone.

I guess I am counting on the authorities to tell me that a device that is so potentially deadly to a plane is not allowed in the cabin. If it is that deadly, I would expect it to be checked and have to be cleared (like firearms) by authorities to decrease the risk to the flight.

If the device is something that can be safely used once we have reached whatever altitude, then I am not concerned that it might be dangerous during take off and landing.

Well, until this discussion, I was confident that putting the reader to sleep, with no wifi or 3G on, was in compliance with the rules. Amazon says the readers onLy use electricity when they change the page? Not correct?

I feel nervous when I see people on planes keep their devices going - I figure why take the chance? There must be some level of concern, as we're also asked to turn devices off in certain areas of hospital. Again, unless proven otherwise, why take chances with other people's safety?

No, the E-INK DISPLAY only uses power when it changes, but there are other elements in the device that are using some standby power. I have no idea how much.

And whether or not that state is strictly in compliance with the airline rules, I don't know for sure either, but I don't think anyone anywhere (other than perhaps in the abstract in threads like this) would have a problem with it. Consuming electricity is not prohibited at take off and landing, as far as I know....

The rules say that it has to be turned off. The few times a Flight Attendant has said something to me directly they have specifically said I have to power it down and not just close the cover. Same with IPods and noise reduction head sets.

There are devices that have no equivalent to "fully off" and are always at, best, in something like a sleep state. Digital watches come first to mind, but there are others.

Strictly speaking, the Kindle has no "Off." It has "Sleep" and "Shutdown" and I'd be willing to argue that either state is in compliance with the spirit of the rule, even if neither state literally meets the letter.

Well - I learn something every day. Thanks. ....the truth is, I don't think I've ever even turned a reader off- I'll have to check the manual
