Heh, I used to hear that all the time, except it was IBM, not Apple. Mostly from the various IT departments I've worked with over the years. Never worked for an IT department, I've always been on the production/maintenance side of manufacturing plants developing SCADA systems and the like.

Strangely, although I had more networking and other credentials than most of the IT people in the companies I worked for, my advice was never heeded and the mess left from ITs involvement was somehow mine to fix.

I was always left wondering if you needed a IBM tattoo in a sensitive area and a partial lobotomy to work in IT at those companies.

No, just an avoidance of pain. I have worked in those sort of IT depts for 30 years. Nothing like a billion dollars hanging fire and company x say company y has bad firmware and company y says company x is full of it. And the CEO says it your job on the line....

If it's all one company, they can't pass the buck. (except in the PC world, where they always pass the buck to the user...)

When it's just something in my private life, I can work around compatibility issues or get other software, it's usually not time critical. In business it usually is time-critical...

Apple is emulating IBM in a way. They offer only the choices that best maximise their profit margins, but make them work well. Apple then insists that this is the only way to do things, and the users have a good experience, so the users beleive that Apple works in their best interest, and they didn't really need anything more.

Worked for Big Blue in the mainframe world...

If you are buying a few million units? Below $1 for the item and the connections. Sure they would have to put a little more thought into the design, but that isn't rocket science. Even the phones are more than large enough to easily fit one in.

Thanks HansTWN.

Thats what I suspected. I would've guessed a couple of $, 3 at most. So at least in Apple and Amazon's case, it very much is the walled garden approach.

While it would probably be nice to have one there I can still easily use an SD card with either my iPad or kindle fire. Sooooo, yeah, no walled garden.

Apple more than anybody else, offers a kind of "cradle to grave" (for lack of a better phrase) experience to its users. Hardware, software, product range, OS integration, etc...all Apple. And they are mostly good. And well marketed. And they look great. They've almost become a fashion accessory. And that's a deliberate marketing ploy. Well done, Apple.

Windows, Android, Linux users have a choice of hardware. Mac OS users don't. Samsung, Asus, Acer users have a choice of OS. Apple hardware users don't. Ergo, the other brands just don't generate the same kind of brand loyalty. An Android fanboi is not loyal to Samsung, just the OS. A Samsung fanboi is not loyal to windows, just the hardware. It's that simple, really. Apple has created a vastly loyal fan-base with nice-looking, quality products, that are priced at the higher end of the market. And they have a cohesive vision of how to serve that fan-base. Some of that fan-base are irritating fanbois who only consider Apple products when purchasing. They have a hard time admitting that Apple makes mistakes, if they even can. (That was the context of my quote, remember?) These annoy me and make me laugh. That was my entire point. The remaining Apple users, the vast majority of them, are not.

Sorry for the length of this post, but I am trying to make myself as clear as possible here.
Same could be said for android devices. The fanboys are just as hardcore. Ruthless, vile & a hive of villainy & scum.

iOS devices are priced just the same, & in some cases less, than other comparable products.

Fashion device is tired & old. I work from home, I use my iOS devices as they were meant. I don't stand out in the street & wave it around like a giddy school girl. When I'm out & about my iPhone is in my pocket. So where does this fashion device come from. You're just using an old cliche just to use it because you really don't know what you're talking about. Tell us how it is a fashion device. Please. I've seen hundreds of thounds of people out in public & have never seen anyone waving it out & flashing it in anyone's face. Sheesh.

Same tired old BS from an apple hater. Plain & simple. You people are disgusting. Of course you don't see apple people saying the same thing here about other devices or OSes. You guys must really be upset that you chose sub-par hardware & software. Seriously, it's so amusing now. There can be no other explanation.

Yeah, but I my case I have no built-in card reader in my laptop either, so I need dual dangling dongles! (Say that 10 times fast!)

I did say it eight times easily and the phrase is in 5/8:

Dual-dangling-dongles, dual-dangling-dongles, 1-2-3, 1-2, 1-2-3, 1-2.

And now back to our regular programme.

Considering I carry a messenger bag & I suspect most people do, it's a non-issue. The point, as I've stated hundreds of times, is that it can be done. Whether you like it or not. It's hard for the apple haters on this forum to accept the fact that iOS devices are not as closed off as they'd like to think. Of course most of them don't even have the device nor used one therefore are if ignorant to its uses.

I don't carry bags around, except on vacation. For the most part, if it doesn't have a card slot or won't fit in my shirt pocket, it stays at home.
  • Galaxy Player gets to travel about
  • iPod touch has to stay at home

For this particular instance (SD cards), it IS an issue to me and (I assume) others. I want to have that function straight out of the box and not have to drop more money on an attachment to achieve it.

Wow; generalize much? Broad sweeping assumptions about other peoples' habits and possessions rarely make one's positions seem more rational.
