Since I've already gone on record as being one of those who picks and chooses, I'll respond to this even though it wasn't directed straight at me...

And my response is, I'll answer that question when you answer it. Why do you feel you can pick and choose which laws to obey?

I presume there's some 'clever' retort coming here, but my answer is, I don't believe that I can pick and choose which laws to obey.

Plainly put: yes. Anybody is at liberty to ignore any given law at any given time. That's what the punishment portion of the law is for. Some laws are obeyed because they make sense, some because the fear of the punishment is greater, some because it just never occurred to anyone to break them (although I believe that would be similar to the "because they make sense" one). Some people may obey all laws/rules 100% of the time with absolutely no exceptions because that's just what good boys and girls are supposed to do. Good on those people. Quite exemplary on their part, I must say. But I certainly haven't run into an abundance of those kind of people in my life. Nor would I like to.

Repeatedly asking "what right have you?" when no one is claiming any "right" seems a bit tiresome to me. Nobody is saying they want a trophy for breaking laws/rules—or that they have some sort of inalienable right to do so. Even though I think it could be argued that in fact, they do.

Not necessarily. For example, I heard in Alabama It’s illegal to wear a fake mustache that causes laughter in church. Not sure it makes sense, but it sure never occurred to me to break it.....

Not so clever really. I'm just not sure that I believe you if you claim to never knowingly breaking the law.

Am I wrong in assuming that you never speed, text/talk/eat while driving, litter, jaywalk, ride your bike on the sidewalk, fib on your taxes, download something from the darknet, engage in public intoxication, stop on the shoulder on the highway, avoid wearing your seatbelt, leave your parked car somewhere (or longer) than you're allowed to, etc, etc.

My answer is: I don't believe I have to right to pick and choose. But on occasion I do so anyway because I'm human, and I'm selfish and I'm willing to accept whatever punishment is handed to me.

Ther's a pretty easy way to stop somebody asking a question you know; answer it. There have been several posts where people have claimed that right.

I think that pointing out that choosing to ignore laws which could end up in other people getting hurt because you don't agree with them is a 'bad thing' is OK. And there's not even any laws against it

Let me take those one by one.

I do not deliberately speed, I do not text or eat while driving (talking while driving is not illegal), I do not litter, jaywalking is not an offence here, I do not own a bike, I do not fill in a tax return (it's an automatic thing, I have very simple tax affairs), I have never downloaded anything from the darknet, public intoxication is not an offence here, I do not stop on the hard shoulder, I always wear my seatbelt, etc etc.

Of course I have inadvertantly broken laws before. My question was about choosing to ignore laws because you disagree with them. Nobody's answered it yet.

I believe that it's OK for you to point out that you believe that, too.

Just as I believe it's OK for others to point out that they believe that ignoring those laws won't possibly end up in other people getting hurt. And that the FAA wouldn't be considering relaxing those rules if they believed it might directly result in people getting hurt.

And your question has been answered... Everybody has the right to break any law they want to—silly as it may sound. Unless you're simply trying to point out that breaking the law is against the law. In which case... duh.

Agreed. I don't think any of us are going to change anybody's mind. I've made my views clear. I'll butt out now.
