With Samsung we see the opposite. Their current 10.1 doesn't have one, but after endless bashing they came to an idea they have to include it, so upcoming version has it.

Well, maybe eventually it won't be a card slot, but some other technology (holographic crytals with NFC coupling. Water proof and sealed! ) but agree the Cloud is not going to replace somekind of local removable storage. Just like the demise of floppy drives didn't mean PCs went network only.

Yeah, that's my biggest complaint about Apple iPods, but notice Amazon has not gone that way yet. Their major point has be to encourage people to buy and use their clouds services, which is reasonable for a for-profit company and somewhat less evil than Apple.
It does have the minor points of less hardware cost, less support issues with people sticking stuff in the slot, less support issues with people putting incompatible or even malicious stuff on the card and some small less dev effort required to maintain the part of the code that would deal with the slot.

What's Prime got to do with anything?

Amazon gives free cloud space for any music and videos, apps and books you purchase from them, as well as letting you download them.

Prime is to get free two day shipping, and as a bonus, free streaming videos and a lending library. And they give a month of that for free. Not worth it for me, personally. Not having doesn't hamper my use of the Fire at all. Stop me when I get to the evil part.

To be fair, Prime gets you a LOT more than just storage. Especially if you use Amazon to buy stuff.

But it's still pretty bad. Any device that intentionally blocks customers from benefiting from widely available technology on similar devices just to make a buck is bad.
