I'm fascinated by the brown, grey and purple. I've racking my brains for any countries that use those colours and can't come up with any.
How about; blue, green, yellow and white - Brazil? Also; green - Libya (famously, the only flag that is a single block of colour, I thnk. Although, thinking about it, has it changed recently?). Last edited by Bilbo1967; 04-02-2012 at 08:40 AM. |

So since responses appear to have ceased I will move things along by providing the color combinations not yet given and providing the links to the two web sites I used for the information.
Red, white & blue - New Zealand - Shayne Parkinson Blue & Yellow - Sweden - Shayne Parkinson Black, red, & yellow - Germany - Shayne Parkinson Red & white – Canada - issybird Blue & white - Greece - issybird Green, white & orange – Ireland - issybird Red, white & green – Italy - issybird Yellow & white Vatican City - issybird Red, white, green & black – UAE - Stitchawl Green, & red – Bangladesh - Stitchawl Red, white, blue & yellow - Malaysia - Stitchawl Red, orange, green & yellow - Sri Lanka - Stitchawl Red, White, Blue, Green, Black and Yellow - South Africa – orlok Green, White, Yellow, Red and Black - Zimbabwe – orlok Red & yellow – China - Bookpossum Blue, green, yellow & white - Brazil – Bilbo1967 Those curious about color combinations not yet named can look here or here. Very nice quiz.
I'll make this one a race to the swift (and the American, probably) and pitch an easy baseball trivia question, in honor of the start of the baseball season this week. 1941 was not a good summer for much of the world, but in the USA it was still the last summer before the war. Baseball proved highly diverting from global tragedies that summer, why? Play ball! |

I considered them, but the colors were already taken. I go to Guam and Saipan several times a year for diving. They are only a 2.5 hour flight for me, and it's like going back to the U.S. as far as shopping goes. U.S. currency, most of the people you see are American servicemen (there are 5 military bases on the 7mile long island...) and all the shops are the same as you would see in any small American town. Guam reminds me of a cross between So.Florida and San Diego, only compressed down into a mile or two of shopping streets. Because of the close proximity of the Marianna Trench, the variety of marine life that can be seen on a single dive is nothing short of amazing!

Hmm, more cricket fans here than baseball!
Hint: Baseball's summer of '41 saw two unrelated events, involving the two greatest players of their generation. If that's not enough, I'll hint some more in the morning. |

Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier in 1947, so I know that isn't it. Babe Ruth's single season home run record was broken by Roger Maris in 1961, so I know that isn't it. The only other really major event I can think of is Joe DiMaggio's 56 consecutive games. Was that in 1941? I'm also guessing the year Lou Gehrig died was 1941.
It is also the year my grandfather could have played professional baseball. When he was 14 he used to play baseball on a men's league. When he was 17 (in 1941) a scout for the Washington Senators saw him play and wanted to sign him, but his dad said no. He was still in high school, and his dad said he would have to graduate first. Then the U.S. entered WWII and my grandpa joined the army (or was drafted) and got hurt while playing baseball in the Philippines, so he never played as a pro. |

It's a shame about grandpa's aborted career in the majors, but what irony! A baseball injury while on active duty in wartime as the cause.
You're right about Joe DiMaggio's streak, which occured in 1941. For the non-Yanks, DiMaggio got a hit in 56 consecutive games; it is believed to be an unbreakable record. Halfway there. Another great was doing great things that summer. |

These are the only two I know about as well, and as far as DiMaggio is concerned it's only because of the Marilyn Monroe connection. Despite baseball's World Series status, it doesn't travel well...

I know the name Ted Williams from the same time period as Joe DiMaggio, who was famous for something, but I have no idea what! I couldn't even tell you what team he played for. My parents bought me a Ted Williams autograph model baseball glove that I may have actually used three times when forced to play catch with my brother... I find baseball to be just a little bit less interesting than golf or collecting matchbook covers.
