The only way to guarantee that you'll get back the books for free after deleting them is to cut and paste them into your computer or storage device.

Plug kindle into computer.
Kindle appears as a removable drive.
Open that drive, open documents folder in that drive.
Search for which books you want to remove from there, cut and paste them onto your computer or storage device.

Alternatively, install Calibre.
Run Calibre, plug kindle into computer.
Open 'device' tab on Calibre, select the books you want to delete, right click, 'backup to library'.
After backup, delete those books from the device tab.

It would be mighty helpful if we knew which model of the Kindle you have. There are now several, and how you delete a book is different for the different models.

How do you delete the books after plugging your kindle into the computer? I might try that next if I have no other way of doing so

Highlight the book on the home page. Press the "left arrow" button. After you see the "remove from device/delete" message... press the center button. Press the "Back" button to cancel.

It sounds like you have a Non-Touch Kindle 4. Does it have a keyboard?

Until Amazon decides to shut you out from your account without explanation as seen on two other recent threads here.... touch wood I don't wish it on anybody.
Calibre + Alf + multiple backups in both epub/mobi of each book and I can sleep.
