I'll also recommend the Chesapeake Bay trilogy (not so much the 4th book, Chesapeake Blue) as romance with strong male characters and lovely plots.

It took me years before I could read Birthright, but that's because my kids are adopted.

I also enjoyed Hidden Riches. (I just finished a re-read of the four MacKade books, which also have strong male PoV characters).

The trouble with Nora Roberts is that nobody writes like her, so it's hard to generalize and say "if you like NR, you'll like..." - maybe mid-90s era (pre-Arcane Society) Jayne Ann Krentz. I also like her SF/R books written as Jane Castle, but for the most part can't stand her Victorian-era Amanda Quick books.

I don't read much erotica (I prefer stronger plots) but Joey Hill consistently gets good reviews at Dear Author.

If you go to Dear Author and search for erotica or BDSM, you'll get a list of reviews. I may not always agree with their letter grades at DA, but I can always tell from a review whether I'll like the book or not.

Jeez if I knew this book was about recommendations I might've clicked sooner. I have no desire to read Fifty Shades of Grey.

(And for the record I'm an SEP aficionado.)

Willing Victim by Cara McKenna. I honestly never "got" some of the harsher erotica themes until I read that book. I still don't read many of those types of books, but that book honestly made me understand the appeal.

I'd personally recommend some of my favorite Linda Howard novels - Mr. Perfect or Open Season are top on my list of favorites.

I'm kind of against the crowd in that I can't stand Nora Robert's Chesapeake series. I love Angel Falls and Public Secrets from her though.

I second Joey Hill - with the note that her titles seem to be total tear-jerkers as well.

I also like Cherise Sinclair (well, not all of them but quite a few). It depends on how BDSM you want your titles. One of my friends separates them by "sugarkink," and total lifestyle.

No idea. I tend to like the stories that are involved and kinky with lots of rope play and the like.

One of my favorites is "Deep in the Woods" by Annabel Joseph.

Natural Law by Joey W. Hill (femdom) is very good. And I love Willing Victim by Cara McKenna.

I still like Cherice Sinclair, but her characters get a bit repetitive, so I haven't read them all yet. Master of the Mountain and Breaking Free are my favorites so far. Oh, and the short story Simon Says: Mine. Love that one.

As for rope, there's a lot of it in Sweet Silence by Melinda Barron

Thanks all. I'll have to try some of these when I get home. Not doing that purchasing at work.

Some how it feels wrong to be switching between Harry Potter and erotica...

The main issue I have with 'romance' books is the apparent requirement for them to include sex. Sex is not romance, romance is not sex. Lust is not the same as love, and romance is (should be?) about love, not lust.

Something could be extremely romantic without anybody every removing a single item of clothing, or be essentially pornographic without being slightly romantic.

I edged into romance from crime novels with JD Robb (Nora Roberts), and frankly none of them would have suffered if the sex scenes had simply been removed.

So hit me! If I can find/afford it, I promise I'll read it (just no series, please, unless the first book is perfectly capable of standing on its own two feet).
_These Old Shades_ by Georgette Heyer.

Unfortunately the ebook is the not the cheapest available edition.

Sex scenes should be integral to the plot and character development. I mean, there is basically an entire subgenre of category romance based on the baby-conceived-during-a-one-night-stand idea.

And if you're interested in that, Sarah Mayberry's just written a good one.

close to anything by Georgette Heyer. I love Avon (from These Old Shades), and Dameral (from Venetia), but I love most of the books. Not Simon the Coldheart, or her other non-Regency historicals, though. Long threads on other sites have been conducted with people debating the merits (and otherwise) of her books. Heyer has her flaws, of course - she's terribly classist and a certain amount of anti-Jewish racism creeps in in a few of the books (Sophy, I think, is the worst one). But her research is impeccable, and she really is the grandmother of that sub-genre.

Discussions here reminded me, and I'm now re-reading Robert's Birthright, but I may very well go back and re-read Heyer's Tollbooth or Talisman Ring. Or Unknown Ajax - I have a soft spot for the miller's brat. <g>

Last edited by BeccaPrice; 03-29-2012 at 04:45 PM. Reason: spelling correction - it's "Ajax" not "Ajaz"
