More than that I think.
Current readers have to be rigid, so the display doesn't crack when you bend or twist the device. Next devices could leave out that reinforcement.

Maybe the border around the display can be made thinner / more level with the display; current models tend to cast a bit of a shadow onto the display when the light is coming from the side.

The case itself still needs to be somewhat rigid for the electronics.

This seems more an incremental change than anything else. Seems to me the real win for a flexible display will be in signage rather than ebooks.

However, WHEN it's actually in a shipping product it will be good that there's competition for eInk. Until then, we don't know things like the contrast ratio, whether it really does produce a lighter device, power consumption and so forth.

I'm very pleased to hear this is going into volume production. I'm looking forward to seeing it in a mainstream ebook reader.

I'd certainly choose an ebook reader with this display over one with a glass substrate, even if the price was a bit higher.

That flexibility could help prevent breakages with people sitting on their readers or having something fall on them. I like the idea.

Plastic Logic was actually making a slightly flexible device originally. think slightly more rigid than a legal pad. but people felt the bending was disconcerting. a majority of peopel who actually held the device were put off by the bendy feeling stating it made them think/feel the deivce would break., the opposite reacton t hey expected.

Thats why the Que and the actual shipping 100 reader are rigid devices. The emotional reaction is "sturdiness".

LG buys the epd film from Eink. then builds the display using their own backplane and substrate. The film here is the same Eink Pearl "hd" film seen in the iRiver Story HD and the Hanvon E920 and as the b&w layer behind Eink Triton color film.

hmmm. Nate the Great posted about Wexler awhile ago on The Digital Reader using this display http://www.the-digital-reader.com/20...-at-ifa-video/ perhaps it will be the first actual device on the market with the LG display.

Incremental??? This will be a boon for schools and libraries. I'm totally opposed to handing out ereaders to school kids until the problem of cracked substrates disappears; and flexible displays solve that problem.

You were lucky. Normal e-ink screens have glass backplane. 90x120 mm large, very thin piece of glass in a flimsy plastic frame. Little pressure on the wrong spot and the display is cracked.
