I don't think historical fiction means that the events took place a long time ago, but just that they took place in the past.
That's okay for your life.

I prefer to think my life has all been contemporary.

I finished Blindness (by José Saramango) last night. It is a good book!

Now... I'm gonna finish Journey to the West. I've been reading that for almost 2 months now

Stupid question but, how is The Hitchhikers Guide To The Galaxy series?

I've been wanting to read them for a while, and I can get all five from Kobo for $13, which seems like a good deal.
Both series are enjoyable, IMO.

Awesome. I can't wait to read book two but I have a bunch of other Sherlock books that I bought with Kobo promo codes, so I'm gonna read some of those first. I've got The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes: The Titanic Tragedy up next.

I agree with that, as it will give you background for Laurie King's books. I've read all 4 novels and a whole bunch of short stories (the collection I have claims that it contains all of them). Have fun!! The Further Adventures of Sherlock Holmes is just one of the short story collections contained in the collection that I have. I got it here on Mobileread.

Twilight is about sparkling vampires. It cannot be compared to Hunger Games.

You're also going to want to read Beekeeping for Beginners, a short that looks at the events of The Beekeeper's Apprentice from a different viewpoint. And yes, A Montrous Regiment is an excellent book also. And the latest one out, Pirate King, is also great. A couple in the middle were only so-so, but still worth reading.

Also both exciting quick reads. I would say a fun read, but that doesn't seem quite right for a story with so much violent death.

I could pick holes in the plot, but I think that would be missing the point.

I'm glad I've read them, and I do now understand what the fuss was about. The Kobo 85% off coupons are valid until the end of March, I think.

Thinking about what to read next.

I've finished The trilogy now. I enjoyed them. As I've said elsewhere, there are plot holes, in the backstory and elsewhere, but they didn't worry me.

I like stories with interesting settings, characters and plots. YA speculative fiction often meets these requirements. I've enjoyed many YA series.

The books are good, but not as fun as the original radio series. You should definitely get and listen to at least the first radio series.

Thanks for the Fred Vargas recommendation. Added to my list. Of course, at my current consumption I'll get to it in the summer of 2018.

Definitely worth the wait (IMHO) - they might all be available as ebooks by then?

The Last Train to Kazan: Stephen Miller

So far a very good historical fiction.

Quote:
It is July 1918. Miller’s morose protagonist, former secret policeman Ryzkhov has spent the last few years in the trenches fighting for the French. Now circumstances and blackmail have brought him back to Moscow, where further blackmail forces him to work for the nascent Soviet secret police, and gives him the task of identifying what has happened to the Tsar and his family. Heading to Yekatarinburg, he is caught up in the bitter conflict between the Whites and the Bolsheviks, but continues with his task, only to discover all is not as clear cut as it first appears…
