I've had mine for over a year and keep in in a a case made from an old book when I leave the house. I usually have it in my backpack and can report no problems. I am however worried now that I've said that it will break

The answer is they are all fragile and none are more fragile then the other.

If you've been that unlucky and you are only using what is basically a skin to protect your Kindle (I presume it's this Incipio NGP case?), then your best bet is probably to try using something more robust to keep your Kindle in. I personally don't like the bulk of 'proper' covers, but they do offer more protection.

I have used Oberon covers on all three of my cases and have had no breaks. The e-ink screens are fragile. You have to treat them carefully.

While it is possible the op is at fault I am pretty sure that after two replacements extreme care would be used. Sometimes others are involved.
Just judging from tone it seems that Amazon has replaced the kindle 3 times under warrentee so maybe it is not a case of carelessness or misuse. If it is, the Op probably knows what they are doing wrong by now. Reasonable care should be taken, but it is a transportable device and if a sturdy cover is necessary to protect this fragile device during everday use and transportation it should come with one. My mother became quite paranoid after her kindle keyboard had to be replaced (no physical damage) so I got her a very sturdy case. She is happy but it almost triples the thickness and is much harder to put away in her very large pockets. The chances of getting four defective kindles are slim, but it could happen. If so I would be demanding a refund. Helen |

No proof, of course, other than handing and using the different devices, but I've always thought that durability and overall ruggedness took a sharp nose-dive after the second generation Kindle. For whatever reason, the stories of units needing to be returned (sometimes multiple returns) for various reasons rose sharply with the release of the K3. That could be because there was just so many more sold though. The newer Kindles may be more aesthetically pleasing, but they just feel a lot less durable to me. *shrug*
Perhaps the newer Pearl screen is more fragile? I know I've bounced my K2 off the floor several times with no disasters (not that I don't recommend handling them delicately). |

There were a lot more people who bought the K3 then bought the K1 and the K2. I would expect an increase in problems because of the larger number of units sold. Also, the K2 had serious screen problems when it was first released. Many folks were returning them because of these problems. Once they got that issue worked out, K2 returns dropped. It would be more informative to know the percentage of people reporting problems for each device because the anecdotal stories are going to increase as the sales of the device increase.
I have bounced by K1, K3, and DXG and have had ni problems. I keep them all in cases and the cases closed when I am not reading. My K1 landed outside a case on the edge and was fine. Sometimes it is a matter of the angle that the device hits. Four broken screens sounds like some one is inadvertently putting too much pressure on a part of the screen and breaking the substrata. It has happened to more then one person and for the most part it is unintentional. Pressure in a backpack, a pet walking over the screen, putting a book on top of the device, something silly. It happened with K1s and K2s. Finally, Amazon has been great about replacing Kindles with broken screens even though they don't have to. They would rather you have a Kindle, increasing the liklihood that you buy Kindle Books, then not. So while they are not obligated to replace broken screens they do so more often then not. |

It was when the K2 initially came out. The problem was screen fading. Many folks had problems when they were reading in the sun that the words would fade away. It was a huge mess. I know some people who went through five or six Kindles before getting one that did not have the fading problem.
I don't recall reading about any serious problems with the K1. The K2 and K3 had problems at luanch. I have not seen a ton of posting about problems with the K4 or the KT. |

I had 4 Kindles and they are all in cases and closed when not in use.
I have even dropped one before face down and it did not break, If you have gone through four I would look at how you are handling them. |

Very true. An IR protective layer was somehow missed out in the manufacturing process, causing the screens to fade in sunlight. Every eInk reader manufacturer of the time ended up with some of them.
