Interesting. Hadn't heard of them before, but signed up. Prices appear reasonable for what they have, but selection isn't great. They do appear to have plans for more--we shall see whether or not those plans pan out. Must admit I'm skeptical of them coming to an agreement with the Big Six, but who knows...

Thanks for the link, I'd not heard of them. I registered my interest (I'm in the UK) and got an email with a youtube video demo of the site. What interested me was the price they quoted for a rental - $2 for a 20-day loan for a single book. Seems high to me.

Are rentals available on the US site yet or is it just sales? If rentals what are the prices like?

I can't access it from work. Are they accepting indie publications?

All I can get into from the UK is a front screen with not much detail. The email I got to confirm registration does say this though:

"If you are an author or an agent with the digital rights to your books we aim to host both new books and an extensive backlist."

From what I understand, they planned to have rentals but their negiotations with the publishers failed. I think they plan to rent textbooks in the future, though.
I'm not going to sign up, though. I don't need another bookstore. And while I am interested in a rental service, I am putting my hopes to Afictionado. At least they are guaranteed to have Macmillan books, since they are partially owned by them. I hope they add information about their prices, soon, though.

We will be delighted to take Indy books. Just give us a couple of months and we will be ready. Our negotiations with publishers about rentals haven't failed. We will also be starting to rent books during this year.

You will be able to see the site in the UK and around the world in about another month

If you would like to see our contract, please send me a message - Tim Coates - reader@bilbary.com - or leave another message on our holding page.

If that's so, you should be absolutely ecstatic !!

"As a retail book seller, executive, advocate for libraries and literacy, author, and entrepreneur, Tim Coates has devoted his four-decade career to promoting his love of books and reading.
Editor and author of 30 books, blogger, former managing director/CEO of retail book sellers Sherratt & Hughes and Waterstone's in England and of the English book chain WHSmith in Europe and proprietor of his own book store, Tim is chairman, founder and visionary for www.Bilbary.com, an e-book retail and lending site in mid-stage development.
Tim’s vision for Bilbary is to create a site exclusively for e-book lending and retail sales that is easy to navigate, accessible to any Internet-connected device and a forum for readers to discuss books and authors. Bilbary is also designed to enable libraries to have greater access to the growing number of published e-books. Conceived amid the turmoil of the rapidly changing publishing business and the rise of e-book popularity."

I've kind of followed this gentleman's career with great interest - it all started when I first went into a bookshop with a sofa !
An original mind, not afraid to think outside the box.

I hope you are successful, Tim, and I'll be there when the UK site opens....

In fact, have some K !!

Hmmmm, I'll believe it when I see it (the rentals, that is--sorry for the skepticism, Tim). So far, that's nothing new about this Bilbary bookstore.
